If your Sonos speaker isn’t functioning properly, or if you’re transferring it to a new owner and want to clear your data, you might need to reset your speaker. Alternatively, in some cases, all you need to do is power your speaker down and reboot it. In this article, we’ll explain how to factory reset or reboot any Sonos speaker, including the Move, Roam, and Roam SL. We’ll also guide you through resetting the Sonos app on your phone, tablet, or desktop computer.
Steps
Performing a Factory Reset (Excluding Move, Roam, and Roam SL)

Disconnect the power cord of your Sonos speaker to turn it off. Before initiating the reset process, ensure your Sonos speaker is powered off by unplugging it.

While plugging in your speaker, press and hold the Join button. Depending on your Sonos speaker model, the Join button may display an infinity symbol (∞) or a pair of arrows facing each other (→←). Hold down the Join button while reconnecting the power cord.
- If your speaker lacks a Join button, hold down Play/Pause or Mute instead.

Continue holding the button until the indicator light alternates between orange and white. Once the orange and white lights start flashing, release the Join button.

Wait until the light flashes green. After releasing the button, the reset procedure initiates. Upon completion, the light transitions from orange and white to green.

Reincorporate the speaker into your system using the Sonos app. Launch the Sonos app on your smartphone or tablet, then navigate to the Settings tab. Choose System, followed by Add Product. Follow the on-screen instructions to reconfigure your speaker.
Performing a Factory Reset (Roam and Roam SL)

Hold the Power button for 5 seconds. Locate the Power button on the rear of your Roam or Roam SL and hold it down until you hear a chime. Watch for the status light on the front of the speaker to turn off.

Press and continue holding Play/Pause, then press the Power button. Depress Play/Pause and maintain pressure, then press Power again. After pressing Power, release the button. Your speaker should power on.

Continue holding
Play/Pause until the light alternates between orange and white. Ensure you maintain pressure on the Play/Pause button while your speaker restarts. Upon reboot, watch for the status light to alternate between orange and white, indicating Reset mode. Release the Play/Pause button.

Wait for the light to flash green, then re-add your speaker to the app. Once the light turns green, your Roam or Roam SL speaker has successfully reset. Open the app and follow these steps to reintegrate the speaker into your system:
- Select System within the Settings tab.
- Choose Add Product.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to reconfigure your speaker.
Performing a Factory Reset (Move)

Remove the Move from its charging base. Before powering off your Move speaker, ensure it's detached from its charger.

Press and hold the Power button for at least 5 seconds. Locate the Power button on the rear of your Move speaker and press it for 5 seconds or until you hear a chime. Additionally, observe the status light atop the speaker turning off.

Hold the Join button while you press and release Power. The Join button on the Move bears an infinity symbol (∞). Press Join, and simultaneously press and release the Power button to reactivate the Move in Reset mode.
- If your Move speaker fails to power on, its battery may be too low. Return it to the charger and then press the Join and Power buttons.

Continue holding Join until the light flashes orange and white. Upon observing the status light flashing orange and white, release the button. Your Move speaker is now in Reset mode.

Re-add your speaker to the app after the light turns green. Once the reset process is complete, the status light will turn green. Open the Sonos app and follow these steps to set up your speaker again:
- Select the Settings tab.
- Tap System.
- Tap Add Product, then follow the prompts to set up your Move.
Restarting Your Sonos Speaker (Excluding Move, Roam, and Roam SL)

Detach the power cord. To restart your Sonos speaker without resetting it, commence by unplugging it. This action will result in your speaker powering down.

Wait for 10 seconds. After unplugging your speaker, allow it at least 10 seconds to fully power off before reconnecting the power cord.

Reconnect the power cord and wait for 1 minute. Immediately upon reconnecting the speaker, it should power back up. Nevertheless, allow at least a minute for the system to completely reboot.
- If your speaker is already set up, the status light should become solid white once the reboot is finished. For new units or recently reset ones, the light will be green.
Restarting Your Sonos Speaker (Move, Roam, and Roam SL)

Remove your speaker from its charger. If you own a Roam or Roam SL, disconnect it from its charging cable or remove it from its wireless charger. For Move owners, lift it off the charging base.

Press and hold the Power button for at least 5 seconds. Locate the Power button on the rear of your Move, Roam, or Roam SL speaker. Hold it down for at least 5 seconds, or until a chime sounds and the status light goes off.

Wait for 10 seconds, then press the Power button again. Once 10 seconds have elapsed, press and release the Power button on the speaker's rear. Allow a minute for your speaker to complete the rebooting process.
- After your speaker finishes restarting, the status light should turn white. However, if you’ve just reset the speaker or if it's never been set up, the light will turn green.
Resetting the Sonos App

Launch the Sonos app on your device. To link your Sonos app with a new system or account, you’ll need to reset the app. Open the Sonos app on your smartphone or tablet to begin the process.

- The Settings tab is positioned in the bottom right corner of the app screen.

Tap App Preferences. Within the Settings menu, choose App Preferences to access a new menu screen.

Scroll down and tap Reset App. Scroll to the bottom of the App Preferences menu to locate the Reset App option. In the confirmation dialog that appears, tap Reset to confirm the action.

Exit the app and then launch it again. Once you've reset the app, you'll receive a prompt to restart it. Afterward, you can either create a new account or log in again to set up your system and preferences.

Choose Reset Controller from the desktop version of the app. If you're using the Sonos app on a desktop computer rather than a mobile device, the procedure differs slightly. Open the app, navigate to the Help menu at the top of the screen, and then select Reset Controller to reset the app.
