Laminate floors are known for their durability, low maintenance, and versatility. One of the main advantages of laminate flooring is its clean, glossy look, and proper care ensures it stays that way. However, the buildup of dust and leftover cleaning products can dull the surface. The key to restoring the shine of laminate floors is to clean them thoroughly with the right cleaner and avoid using products that could damage the surface.
Steps
Clean the floor

Dust or vacuum the floor. Use a microfiber mop to remove dust and dirt from the floor. Alternatively, you can vacuum, but be sure to attach the hard floor nozzle to prevent scratching the laminate. Avoid using vacuums with beater bars, as they may also scratch the surface of the floor.

Choose a cleaner. The dull film that forms on laminate floors is usually caused by using the wrong cleaners, such as soap and oil-based products. To avoid this, it's best to use a floor cleaner specifically designed for laminate floors. Alternatively, you can create your own cleaning solution by mixing the following ingredients in a spray bottle:
- ½ cup (120 ml) water
- ½ cup (120 ml) white vinegar
- ½ cup (120 ml) rubbing alcohol

Spray the cleaner directly on the floor. Apply a thin, even layer of the cleaning solution to the surface. Start in a small area so that you can mop the whole section without stepping on wet floor. Laminate floors don't handle water well, so make sure no water accumulates on the surface.
- Never mop laminate floors with a mop and bucket, as the floor can get too wet.

Mop the floor with a microfiber mop. Use a flat microfiber mop to clean the entire floor, following the grain of the wood. The floor will be slightly damp but not overly wet.
- Avoid using a mop with a sponge head or regular cloth mop, as they may leave streaks and excess water on the floor.

Work in small sections until the entire floor is clean. Step back and spray the cleaner on the next section. Mop the area with the microfiber mop. Continue spraying and mopping small sections until the entire surface is clean.
- Once the floor is clean, let it dry naturally for about 30 minutes. Avoid walking on the floor while it's still wet, as it may prevent the floor from being fully shiny.
Polish the floor with a dry microfiber cloth. Once the floor is dry, check the surface under the light for any dull spots. Buff and polish the spots using a clean, dry microfiber cloth to restore the floor's shine.
Maintain a clean and shiny floor

Regularly sweep or vacuum the floor. Dust not only makes the floor dirty but can also cause scratches on the laminate surface. It’s advisable to sweep or vacuum the floor at least once a week or more often if you have children, pets, or heavy foot traffic.
- When vacuuming, always use the attachment designed for hard floors.

Clean the floor regularly with appropriate cleaners. You should mop the floor at least once a week after vacuuming. Target small sections by spraying cleaner directly on the floor and wiping with a microfiber mop. To maintain its shine, use either commercial cleaners or a homemade solution specifically for laminate floors.
- To prevent dull spots, avoid cleaners that contain soap, oils, or harsh chemicals.

Place a doormat at your entryway. Doormats are not only welcoming but are also designed to trap dirt, mud, water, and other debris brought in from outside. A doormat at the entrance will help keep your floors cleaner, reducing the need for frequent sweeping and mopping.
Clean up spills immediately. Laminate flooring is durable but not water-resistant. If food or liquids spill, use a spoon or cloth to remove any solid food and wipe up any remaining liquid or water with a clean cloth.
- If laminate is exposed to water for too long, it can warp or get damaged.
Prevent floor damage

Avoid using wax or floor polishing chemicals. Laminate floors naturally have a shiny finish, so it's best not to use wax or chemical polishes on them. In fact, these substances can cause damage and make the surface appear dull.
- To maintain the shine, clean the floor regularly with cleaners specifically designed for laminate flooring.

Steer clear of abrasive cleaning pads. Laminate floors are prone to scratching, so avoid using abrasive sponges or scrubbers. The best cleaning materials are soft, lint-free cloths or microfiber towels.
- Abrasive cleaning tools include steel wool, scrub pads, and abrasive sponges.

Refrain from using wet cleaning methods. Steam and other liquids can damage laminate floors, causing them to warp. Avoid water-based cleaning methods, including steam mops, regular mops with water, or even spray mops that mist water on the floor.

Use furniture pads to protect the floor. To prevent scratches from furniture legs and other items, attach felt pads to the bottoms of all furniture that comes into contact with the laminate floor. For chairs and tables, small round pads work well. For larger or heavier items, use larger pads for better protection.
