Today, Mytour will show you how to activate the keyboard backlight on your HP Pavilion laptop. You can usually turn on the backlight by pressing a specific function key, such as "F5". If your Pavilion laptop has a backlight but it isn't working, you may need to reset the backlight through a manual restart (hard reboot).
Steps
Reset the lighting mode from the manufacturer

Ensure that your HP Pavilion has a removable battery. To resolve potential hardware issues with the backlight, you can perform a hard reboot, but this process requires removing the laptop battery.
- Although it is possible to remove the built-in battery from some HP Pavilion models, this requires disassembling the keyboard and other sensitive components before accessing the battery. We do not recommend this method.

Disconnect any cables or USB devices from the computer. This includes components such as the charging cable, USB flash drive, speakers, and more.

Remove the battery from the laptop. If your laptop uses a removable battery, you can follow these steps:
- Turn the laptop upside down so the bottom is facing up.
- Press and hold the latch on the battery compartment cover.
- Remove the battery compartment cover from the laptop.
- Take the battery out and place it on a soft, dry surface (such as a towel).

Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. This will discharge any remaining power inside the device.

Reinstall the battery and cover. Now, you can power the laptop back on.
- Plug in the charger if the battery was low to prepare for the hard reboot process.

Turn on the laptop. Press the power button to start the laptop. It will boot up normally.

Try turning on the backlight. After manually restarting your laptop, you should now be able to switch between the keyboard's lighting settings.

That's it.
Turn on the light

Ensure that your HP Pavilion has a backlit keyboard. Not all HP Pavilion laptops feature this function. If you are still unable to locate the option to enable the backlight, check the user manual or online resources for your device to confirm whether or not your laptop’s keyboard has this feature.

Plug in your laptop. In some cases, the backlight may not illuminate if the laptop hasn't been charged to a certain level. You can fix this by plugging in the charger.

Look for the "Backlight" key. The "Backlight" key is usually located in the function key row (often F5) above the keyboard. The key will display an icon of three dots.

Press the "Backlight" key several times. If the keyboard is configured to use hardware features when the function key is pressed, this action will toggle between the different backlight modes. You will notice the backlight brightness changing accordingly.
- If nothing happens when you press the "Backlight" key, proceed to the next step.

Try holding the "Backlight" key while pressing the Fn key. The Fn key is located on the bottom left of the keyboard. If you couldn't activate the backlight in the previous step, try holding the Fn key and then pressing the "Backlight" key to switch between backlight options using the function key.
- You may need to press the "Backlight" key multiple times while holding the Fn key to toggle through the available lighting options.
Tip
- To repair a malfunctioning keyboard backlight, you will need the expertise of a professional technician.
Warning
- If the laptop's backlight is broken or burned out, the solution is to replace it with a new one.
