Uber is an on-demand ride-hailing service that allows you to request a private driver through the app on iPhone and Android devices. This service uses transportation software to dispatch the nearest driver to pick you up. It’s important to note that this is not a shared ride or traditional taxi service – Uber provides a private car for your use. You won’t need cash, as the trip cost is automatically deducted from the credit card linked to your account. This article will guide you through the process of using Uber and booking a ride.

Visit the Uber website. Uber is a company that enables you to book private rides in any city where Uber operates. Drivers are not employees of Uber, and they pay a percentage to Uber to be listed on the platform.

[Avoid posting personal referral codes here – this violates Uber’s policies and guidelines, and your account may be deactivated]. Visit Uber’s website to get a promo code if you don’t have friends using Uber. A valid credit card or PayPal account is required to use Uber’s services.

Review the terms and conditions. Ensure you agree to Uber’s terms and policies before proceeding.

Find a Driver

Download the app. The Uber app is available on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and BlackBerry App World. Install the app on your device and launch it.

Log in. Once you’ve downloaded the Uber app to your device, you’ll need to log in during your first use. Use the username and password you registered with to sign in.

Choose your ride type. Uber offers around 5 different ride options, depending on your location. Use the slider at the bottom of the app to select your preferred vehicle. The 5 ride types currently available are:
- Black Car (UberBlack) – Uber’s original service. A premium 4-seater sedan will be dispatched to pick you up when you select this option.
- Taxi – Uber will call a taxi affiliated with their service for you. These taxis are similar to regular ones, except payment is processed through the app.
- UberX – A standard 4-seater car will be sent to your location. This is Uber’s most cost-effective option.
- SUV – A 6-seater SUV will be dispatched for your ride. This service is more expensive than the Black Car option.
- LUX – A luxury car will be sent to pick you up. This is Uber’s most premium and expensive service.

Mark your location. Once you’ve selected your desired ride type, you can mark your location using the pin icon on the map. This pin will show the driver exactly where to pick you up. You can also manually enter your pickup point. After setting the pickup location, click the “Set Pickup Location” button.
- You’ll need to confirm your selection on the displayed screen.
- You’ll be given the option to pay with any card linked to your account. This option is enabled by default.

Wait at the confirmed pickup spot. Avoid going indoors or moving to a different location if the car hasn’t arrived yet, as the driver won’t know your exact location and may waste valuable time searching for you. Uber will provide an estimated arrival time for your ride. If no cars are available, try again after a few minutes, as drivers may finish their current trips and become available.
- The Uber app will provide the driver’s phone number. You can use this to contact the driver for any special requests.
- If you cancel the ride more than 5 minutes before the driver arrives, a 5,000 VND cancellation fee will be refunded to your account. No refunds are issued if canceled after this time.
- Pickup times vary depending on the city, time of day, and demand.

Understand the pricing. Uber calculates fares based on a combination of time and distance. If the car travels below 18 km/h, you’ll be charged per minute, and above 18 km/h, you’ll be charged per kilometer. A base fare is also applied, which varies by location.
- This rule doesn’t apply to taxi services, as taxi fares are set by the individual taxi provider.
- Fares differ by city, so check Uber’s website or use the online fare estimator. Every city has a minimum fare.

No cash payments. All charges are automatically processed through Uber using your credit card. If you use the TAXI service, you can adjust the tip amount via Uber Payment Settings – the default is 20%. Tipping is not required for other Uber services like UberX, but it’s a kind gesture. Note that only Uber TAXI offers the tipping option within the fare.
- You can modify the taxi tip amount on Uber’s website. Log in and navigate to the Billing section to change the default tip. Be cautious, as ratings below 5 stars can negatively impact drivers, and they may avoid picking you up in the future. Uber considers only 5-star ratings as positive, and anything lower can affect the driver’s service reputation.

Request a ride via the website or SMS. In the U.S., if you can’t access the Uber app, you can book a ride through Uber’s mobile website or by texting your pickup address and city name to UBR222.
