I would like to share about the time when I assisted a junior student in my high school. It all began towards the end of my eleventh grade. At that time, I had won first prize in a regional English writing competition and gained popularity among students specializing in English.
One day, a sophomore specializing in English contacted me, expressing admiration for me and a desire to emulate my success. With the summer break approaching and free time abundant, I encouraged him to send me his essays for feedback. I found his ideas to be quite unique, yet he was still a novice in articulating his arguments and controlling his tendency to use advanced vocabulary excessively.
Despite being busy as a senior student, recognizing his potential, I provided constructive criticism and suggested he submit his essays to me regularly. Periodically, I introduced him to new writing techniques and academic principles, supervised his argumentation and vocabulary usage.
The results were remarkable: about a year later, he won first prize in the same writing competition where I had previously competed. Additionally, through this tutoring, we developed a close friendship because we shared many common interests such as university choices and a passion for travel.
I felt deeply honored by his success, but more than anything, I felt a sense of gratitude because I hadn't expected that helping someone could also bring me a friend, as the saying goes, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”
