II. Sample for IELTS Writing Task 1 The distribution of time between leisure and household duties by men and women
The table presents data on time allocated to recreational activities, while the bar chart depicts the duration spent on household chores by gender in a country for the year 2008. In general, men spent more time on two out of three leisure activities compared to women. Conversely, women were more engaged in daily household tasks than their male counterparts.
Regarding daily leisure, watching TV, listening to the radio, and viewing videos were the most time-consuming activities for both sexes, with men averaging around 137 minutes and women 118 minutes. Conversely, women dedicated slightly more time to reading than men, with 19 versus 18 minutes. Lastly, men in this country spent a quarter-hour on sports, nearly 1.5 times more than women.
According to the bar chart, kitchen tasks consumed more time than any other activity. Women spent nearly 80 minutes daily on cooking and dishwashing, while men averaged just about 30 minutes. Women allocated over 30 minutes a day to shopping, laundry, and ironing, and recorded the least time on repairs, with under 10 minutes. None of these tasks took more than 30 minutes of men’s time on average, with men spending twice as much time on repairs compared to women. Laundry tasks took the least time for men, with 10 minutes, which is a third of the time spent by women.
