Main body of the sample essay

One reason why schools should attend to project-based skills more is that some traditional skills may become irrelevant in the time coming. For example, educators might invest a lot of effort teaching students to speak Chinese, but students can later discover that the new Google Translate app enables them to conduct a conversation in almost flawless Mandarin, Cantonese or Hakka. Hence, those traditional skills should be downplayed in the curriculum and replaced by general-purpose life skills taught by projects such as the ability to deal with change, to learn new things, and to preserve our mental balance in unfamiliar situations.

Another reason for implementing practical projects is that they can better prepare students mentally for unforeseen challenges in the future. In order to thrive in a rapidly changing world, students will require significant mental flexibility and emotional resilience, qualities that can be cultivated through participation in project-based learning. For example, when engaging in a project to explore shifts in contemporary language, students may need to repeatedly adapt to new information and become comfortable with uncertainty. This mirrors the cognitive processes they may encounter when confronted with various changes in the future.
