Sekiro: Instant Noodles Edition
The core gameplay of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice revolves around dual-wielding samurai-style sword fights, combined with ninja gadgets and special skills. Kannagi Usagi follows the same path but is much more simplified. You'll face 8 consecutive boss battles, meaning constant intense combat without any frills. If you've played Sekiro, you'll notice Kannagi Usagi has replicated the most important mechanism: continuously parrying the boss's attacks, filling their posture, and then delivering a finishing move.
Of course, being a streamlined game, Kannagi Usagi only features regular attacks, parrying to counter enemy attacks, and a Mikiri Counter - a move that can't be blocked, forcing you to dodge or time it right to nullify. The game eliminates the main character's posture bar, allowing you to parry continuously without worrying about running out of stamina. Moreover, the loading time is almost non-existent, and if defeated, you can immediately counter-attack. Perfect for a straightforward entertainment game.
However, this doesn't mean Kannagi Usagi lacks challenges. All 8 bosses in the game draw inspiration and attack moves from Sekiro, meaning their difficulty is no walk in the park. Each boss has a set of skills, attack patterns, speed, and different rhythms. You'll need to constantly parry and attack smoothly, rather than mindlessly button-mashing. Kannagi Usagi perfectly replicates Sekiro's gameplay, especially the timing and i-frame moments, allowing you to jump and strike from above. The character moves smoothly without any lag or stiffness. The feeling of timely parrying, the sound of metal clashing, avoiding the enemy's combos, and finishing them off is truly satisfying. Playing Kannagi Usagi is highly addictive due to its fast pace, simple attacks, and decisiveness.
Of course, the game's difficulty level can't match the original, but compared to Sekiro, Kannagi Usagi is still a genuine and valuable Souls-like game. If you haven't played Sekiro, be prepared to face numerous defeats and reset multiple times to defeat a boss, even for seasoned players. The absence of ninja tools forces you to rely entirely on parrying and counter-attacks, presenting a real challenge. Kannagi Usagi has depth and is worth replaying because defeating bosses is truly addicting.
Cute Girls Are Always Right
Aside from being free and having gameplay similar to Serkiro, what makes Kannagi Usagi stand out is its visual appeal. This game is a true paradise for 'wibu' enthusiasts, as all characters are females in anime style. From the main character, a loli with rabbit ears, to a female ninja with cat ears, a white-haired monster with a fox mask, or the final boss, who is also a rabbit but not a loli.
Nothing is more fantastic and enticing than playing a Souls-like game while admiring cute anime characters dancing in front of you. As mentioned earlier, Kannagi Usagi's character design is extremely smooth, and the attacks feel like a real dance. Combined with Japanese-themed costumes, sometimes you might wish to be 'punished' by the boss more than achieving victory! Kannagi Usagi has received a perfect score of 10/10 on Steam mainly for this reason - its graphics are simple, focusing entirely on female characters (no male characters in this game). When looking at characters like a fox-eared girl wielding a long spear in a stylized kimono or a female ninja in an outfit with a slit on the side, you'll realize the creator of Kannagi Usagi truly understands the gamers' taste by creating a paradise for 'wibu' to both sword fight and feast their eyes.
The only regret is that Kannagi Usagi doesn't have voice acting, but it doesn't hinder the game from receiving a perfect score, and all reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Whether you've played Sekiro before or not, trying out this game and admiring the cute anime girls is never outdated. You can download Kannagi Usagi for free on Steam, don't miss it!
