Trước khi mùa giải Premier League đầu tiên bắt đầu, Alan Shearer trở thành cầu thủ người Anh đầu tiên có mức chuyển nhượng trên 3 triệu bảng. Những kỷ lục này tiếp tục tăng trong vài mùa giải đầu tiên của Premier League, cho đến khi Alan Shearer phá vỡ kỷ lục với mức chuyển nhượng 15 triệu bảng khi gia nhập Newcastle United vào năm 1996. Ba kỷ lục chuyển nhượng cao nhất trong lịch sử thể thao đều đến từ các câu lạc bộ Premier League, với Tottenham Hotspur bán Gareth Bale cho Real Madrid với giá 85 triệu bảng vào năm 2013, Manchester United bán Cristiano Ronaldo cho Real Madrid với mức giá 80 triệu bảng vào năm 2009, và Liverpool bán Luis Suárez cho Barcelona với giá 75 triệu bảng vào năm 2014.
