Chill……….Gild…...
Have you ever confused the pronunciation of these two words? If so, today's lesson from Mytour's instructors will surely be helpful for you.
Unlike previous pairs of consonants, today's consonant pair is less common and not as difficult to distinguish as the previous pairs. This lesson will help you differentiate the pronunciation of k and g in English.
k and g are grouped together because they have similar pronunciation. Watch the video below by Mr. Hayden Smith and pay attention to the smallest details, or you will easily make mistakes.
1. Pronouncing /k/
Step 1: Raise the back of your tongue until it touches a soft part of the roof of your mouth, called the velum.
Step 2: Lower your tongue from the position in Step 1 and release air, creating the /k/ sound.
Note: If you are unsure of the exact position of your tongue's back, watch the video carefully to be guided specifically. Another way to check if you are pronouncing correctly is to place a small piece of paper in front of your mouth when pronouncing. If the paper vibrates, it means there is air blowing onto the paper, indicating that you have pronounced correctly.
