Attending an upscale dinner can be overwhelming, especially when plates and glasses seem scattered everywhere. But fear not – this easy-to-follow rule helps you identify your own place settings in no time.
Whether you're attending a business dinner, a formal party, or a family gathering, a high-end dinner often comes with more utensils than you’d use in an entire week. If formal events aren’t part of your routine, you might forget the basic rules. So, if you're sitting at the table and can’t recall which utensils and glasses belong to you, Jim Schleckser of Inc. offers a helpful tip:
...create two circles by bringing your index fingers and thumbs together on both hands. Make sure to stretch your fingers as though you’re forming the 'OK' gesture with each hand. But what else do you notice when you look down? The letter “b” in your left hand and the letter “d” in your right. The “b” stands for bread, indicating your bread plate is to the left. The “d” stands for drink, signifying that your water glass is to the right.
Now the confusion is gone. This trick takes just a second, and you can do it discreetly under the table if you’re worried about others noticing. But if they do catch you, you've just made a fantastic conversation starter! While there are plenty of other formal dining etiquette rules to remember, they’re easy to pick up.
