Up until now, there haven't been many apps supporting this feature. However, as Android 8.0 Oreo reaches more devices, developers have decided to include it in their app lineup.
Google's Picture-in-Picture mode is similar to multi-window functionality, but operates entirely differently. With this mode, you can view and interact with Google Maps navigation while reading text messages, shrink YouTube to take a call, or check emails.
The new Picture-in-Picture mode works similarly to cable boxes or TVs. When using Google Maps, YouTube, Netflix, or VLC, simply press the Home button. Instead of just going to the home screen, YouTube will shrink to a corner of the screen and continue playing the video.
You can move the app around, expand it to full screen, or continue playing the program you just exited. The noteworthy point here is that the system operates similarly across all apps, but how you utilize PiP mode may vary slightly.
For example, as mentioned earlier, on Google Chrome browser, firstly, you need to play the video in full-screen mode, and then click the Home button to activate PiP. You'll see it appear in the bottom right corner of the screen and continue playing. Tap on the window to perform control functions or options like pause, play, fast forward, close, or return the video to full-screen mode.
To completely close the PiP window, you need to tap on it and press the X icon, or simply drag and drop it off the mobile screen. In VLC, the PiP mode will be directly selected from the video playback menu.
Apps supporting Picture-in-Picture mode on Android Oreo
Initially, this mode only supported Google Maps, but gradually it has been expanded to other apps. In the near future, we hope this list of supported apps will continue to grow. Here's a list of some apps supporting this mode:
Google Chrome
YouTube
Google Play Movies & TV
Duo
Google Maps
VLC (beta version)
Netflix
YouTube Red
YouTube TV
Pocket Casts
Telegram
WhatsApp (Beta)
Facebook
Most of these apps work smoothly. However, with WhatsApp, you need to install the latest beta version, or with Facebook, you have to press the Home button while watching a video because PiP mode does not work with all Facebook data.
If desired, you can check installed apps that support PiP mode by accessing Settings >Apps &Notifications >Advanced >Special Apps Access > and selecting Picture-in-Picture.
To enable PiP mode on VLC, you need to go to the Google Play Store, search for VLC, scroll down to the bottom of the page, select 'Yes, I'm in' to join the beta program, and download the latest version of the app.

Youtube also supports the PIP or Picture-in-Picture feature. To activate this feature, refer to how to Use PIP Mode on Youtube for Android here.
