Efficient Unloading Techniques for Trucks

For a simpler approach, unload the truck from both sides. This method ensures that loads are easily accessible to the forklift truck, eliminating the need for forklift tine extensions. It's particularly suitable for novice forklift drivers and large-scale unloading operations such as unloading 20+ pallets from trucks and trailers.
Consider unloading from one side using forklift tine extensions if it's standard practice in your workplace.
Truck Loading
Decide on the loading method.

Opt for loading a truck from both sides. This method is generally the simplest of the three options, where loads are evenly distributed on both sides using standard fork tines. It's particularly suitable for bulk loads (20+ pallets) but may not be ideal for smaller loads (less than 5 pallets) due to increased time spent by the truck driver opening and closing curtains. Additionally, it may cause delays for forklift drivers, impacting efficiency.

Load the truck from one side without tine extensions. This is undoubtedly the most challenging approach, as standard forklift tines cannot reach the far side of the truck. In this scenario, loads must be carefully maneuvered across using the fork tines, typically by pushing the pallet from its bottom deck boards or pallet blocks, particularly with heavier loads or euro type pallets.

Load the truck from one side with forklift tine extensions. Although more demanding, this method can be attempted by moderately experienced drivers. Forklift extensions enable loads to be transferred across to the other side of the truck.

Pointers
-
While loading/unloading trucks, don't hesitate to seek advice from the truck driver or ask them to assist you. They are usually nearby and eager to complete the task promptly to adhere to their schedule. Most truck drivers are willing to help without rushing you during the process.
Cautionary Notes
- When unloading freight from a truck, avoid completely unloading one side, especially with heavy or abundant freight, as this could lead to the truck tipping over. The truck driver should be aware of approximate weights and prompt you to balance the unloading process periodically, adjusting based on the load's distribution.
- Always be mindful of the height of your load when unloading tall or large items from a truck, particularly if you're accustomed to smaller loads. It's easy to overlook and risk hitting the top of the truck, potentially causing damage or even tipping the load back into the truck.
- Upon joining a new workplace, inquire about their policies regarding receiving freight from trucks. Some may opt to unload before inspection, while others prefer to verify goods before unloading. Regardless, if you encounter damaged goods, cease unloading and notify your supervisor immediately. It's far more challenging to address damaged items post-unloading.
