Listen to the Podcast on IELTS Speaking Part 2 - Describe a historical place in Vietnam:
In Hanoi, there’s a place that I absolutely adore discussing whenever history is brought up. It’s the Long Bien Bridge, constructed over the Red River almost two centuries ago by the French, who occupied my country during that period.
It serves as a vital connection between central Hanoi and the eastern part of the city. Due to its age, the bridge has witnessed many significant events in Hanoi’s history. Long Bien has been repaired numerous times after being bombed during the war, and since then, while newer bridges handle heavy motor traffic, Long Bien remains accessible only to cyclists and pedestrians.
Today, Long Bien is rarely used by commuters, yet its significance hasn’t diminished. It still contributes to enhancing Hanoi’s scenery as it remains photogenic. The view of the Red River becomes more animated with its presence, explaining why many regard Long Bien as Hanoi’s iconic landmark.
For me, this bridge is also a meaningful part of my life because it’s my favorite cycling spot. I can’t recall when I first developed an affection for this place. Long Bien is undoubtedly antique by today’s standards, which is why I believe the government should allocate funds to maintain it. However, any restoration work should preserve the bridge’s architectural beauty.
