Commencing with 60,000 departures in 1988, this figure decreased to around 55,000 in 1990 before sharply declining to over 30,000 after two years. The number of emigrants from Ireland continued to decrease to approximately 27,000 for the following 12 years, then suddenly increased to 50,000 in 2008.
