2. Tendency Storage and Usage of Digital Music in 2020
At present, the strength of storage capacity of lossy music formats is still demonstrated through their popularity on music streaming services such as Apple Music or Spotify. However, the development of Hi-res streaming models like Tidal, Amazon Music HD,... with increasingly affordable prices may mark a turning point in the storage of entertainment industry data. Similarly, audiophiles also have a demand for using audio products with better quality that suits their audio equipment, especially when hard drive capacity is no longer a concern in 2020. I would like to share some experiences in using various audio formats to address concerns about which formats to prioritize.Lossy: MP3 vs AAC
In Vietnam, most people may be familiar with choosing 320 or 128 music from Nhaccuatui or Zing Mp3 instead of buying AAC music from the Apple Store. Personally, I find that both formats do not differ significantly in audio quality. Developed based on PCM platform, sometimes WAV and AIFF recordings may have slightly better quality than FLAC, but this difference is not really significant. However, the experience of ripping files and managing music varies greatly among the three digital music formats. Updating Metadata on WAV used to be a nightmare as this format not only poorly supported storing accompanying information but also caused errors when used across multiple platforms, making the accompanying information unable to be displayed by other systems. FLAC addresses this weakness of WAV very well, but AIFF is the ultimate winner. The ease and accuracy of updating Metadata on AIFF files are key factors in my decision to rip and store all my music CDs in this format.DSD: DSF or DFF
Basically, DSD is simply an audio storage method, with no relationship between DSD and accompanying information (DSF). Therefore, when talking about high-quality DSD music formats, we need to mention DSF and DFF. Considering convenience, I recommend prioritizing DSF.
