PRETEND TO V OR V-ING? DIFFERENT STRUCTURES RELATED TO PRETEND

1. Pretend Structure

Pretend (Pronunciation: /prɪˈtend/) is a verb that carries the Vietnamese equivalent meaning of “Giả vờ”. There are 4 common structures with Pretend as follows:

1.1 To V

Cấu trúc: S + pretend + (not) to + V-inf

For example:

Were you just pretending to be interested? (Cậu chỉ giả bộ hứng thú thôi chứ gì?)

Anna pretended not to know about the surprise. (Anna giả bộ không biết gì về điều bất ngờ.)

1.2 refrain from doing something

This phrase is often used when not affirming something is wrong.  

Example: 

Robin was very honest in insisting that he didn't pretend to know all the answers. (Robin rất trung thực khi khẳng định rằng anh ta không biết toàn bộ các đáp án.)

Susan doesn't pretend to think that her son is perfect. (Susan không nghĩ rằng con trai cô ấy là đứa hoàn hảo.)

1.3 The clause

Cấu trúc: S + pretend + (to somebody) (that) + S + V

For example: 

Sarah pretended (that) she didn't mind, but I knew that she did. (Sarah vờ như cô ấy không quan tâm, nhưng tôi biết là cô ấy có.)

The children pretended (that) they were dinosaurs. (Đám trẻ giả làm khủng long.)

1.4 Pretend about something

Cấu trúc: S + pretend something

Ví dụ: Jimmy pretended an interest he did not feel. (Jimmy giả bộ tỏ vẻ hứng thú.)

2. How to use Pretend

The verb Pretend is widely used and carries the following meanings:

To behave in a particular way, in order to make other people believe something that is not true (Giả vờ làm điều gì đó khiến người khác tin dù bạn biết không phải là thật).

For example: 

Rachel is tired of having to pretend all the time. (Rachel phát mệt vì lúc nào cũng phải giả vờ.)

Linda pretended to her family that everything was fine. (Linda giả vờ trước mặt người nhà rằng mọi thứ vẫn ổn.)

(especially of children) to imagine that something is true as part of a game (Chơi trò chơi tưởng tượng, thường là trẻ nhỏ).

For instance:

These little boys didn't have any real money so they had to pretend. (Mấy đứa bé trai này không có tiền thật nên chúng đành giả bộ.)

Let’s pretend (that) we’re astronauts. It will be fun. (Tụi mình hãy giả làm phi hành gia. Sẽ vui lắm cho coi.)

(usually used in negative sentences and questions) to claim to be, do or have something, especially when this is not true (Không giả vờ điều gì đó là thật).

Ví dụ: Lany didn’t pretend to be an expert on the subject. (Lany không vờ như là một chuyên gia về chủ đề này.)

I don’t pretend (that) I know much about the subject, but… (I don't feign to know much about this topic, but…) 

3. Some synonyms for Pretend

3.1 Imagine

Make believe mang ý nghĩa tương tự như Pretend, nhưng có tính phổ biến hơn khi nói chuyện với trẻ em, hoặc để nói rằng ai đó đang hành động như thể điều gì đó không quan trọng.

Ví dụ: Let's make believe that we're both superheroes! (Tụi mình đóng vai làm siêu anh hùng đi!)

He tried to make believe that the problems will be solved soon. (Anh ta cố làm ra vẻ như vấn đề sẽ sớm được giải quyết ngay.)

3.2 Toy with something

Khi bạn đang giả làm ai đó hoặc thứ gì đó trong trò chơi, thì có thể sử dụng Play at something (UK English) để diễn đạt.

Ví dụ: The children are so excited to play at princesses. (Bọn trẻ rất phấn khích khi hóa thân thành các nàng công chúa.)

3.3 Counterfeit

Fake được dùng để nói về việc bạn đang giả vờ cảm thấy theo một cách nào đó. Fake cũng được sử dụng khi bạn muốn giả bệnh trong khi thực tế không phải vậy.

Ví dụ: Martha was not happy about the news, but she faked it perfectly. (Martha chẳng lấy làm vui khi biết tin nhưng cô ấy đã giả vờ một cách hoàn hảo.)

3.4 Simulate

Feign là một cách nói trang trọng hơn rằng bạn đang giả vờ có một vấn đề hoặc cảm xúc cụ thể.

Ví dụ: It is difficult to tell when students are feigning illness and when they are not. (Thật khó mà biết khi nào học sinh giả bệnh và khi nào thì không.)

3.5 Assume the identity of someone/ Pretend to be someone

Impersonate/ Pose as someone được sử dụng khi bạn đang giả làm một người nào đó, đặc biệt là để đánh lừa người khác và lấy thứ gì đó, thì có thể nói rằng bạn đang mạo danh họ.

Ví dụ: The suspect was charged with impersonating a police officer. (Nghi phạm bị buộc tội mạo danh một sĩ quan cảnh sát.)

Kelvin was an FBI agent posing as an extremist to gather intelligence. (Kelvin là một đặc vụ FBI đóng giả một kẻ cực đoan để thu thập thông tin tình báo.)
