A sample smile IELTS speaking part 1
1. When do individuals smile at each other?
(Band 6.0) Mmm, I think usually people crack a smile when they see each other at social events, as a way of saying hi or starting a conversation.
(Band 8.0) I think it is human nature to have the desire to be liked by others. And a smile allows you to put out a friendly vibe, saying that you are approachable and pose no threats. Also, smiling is the perfect vehicle to express your interest in someone. When trying to spark a conversation, don’t you think a smile is a great way to start?
2. Do you smile when someone takes your photo?
(Band 6.0) Yes, of course. Cause I want to look happy and friendly in photos, although I’m quite self-conscious about my teeth.
(Band 8.0) I don’t want to get too personal, but I have always felt insecure about my teeth ever since I was a little child. To this day, I still find it painfully difficult for me to be comfortable in front of the camera and to give a natural smile, which is something I need to fix. As a matter of fact, one of my resolutions for 2020 is to be able to smile more often. And hopefully, get some of those moments captured in photos.
3. Can you identify a fake smile?
(Band 6.0) Yes, I think so. It is quite easy to realise when someone is putting on a smile. You just have to look at their eyes to see if they are really happy or not.
(Band 8.0) Not to toot my own horn, but I consider myself quite a good judge of character. I am extremely intuitive, and my detection for phoniness is usually spot on. Also, not even the best liars could fake what comes from the heart, which means a genuine smile shouldn’t be counterfeited that easily.
