I’ve always had a keen sense of fashion since I was young, so individuals who dress in a peculiar manner often capture my attention. When posed with this question, one person immediately springs to mind: Mary Ann, a college acquaintance known only by her nickname. 

To clarify, Mary Ann and I are not friends or even acquaintances. We shared just one class during our four years at university, and aside from occasional encounters in hallways or parking lots, our paths seldom crossed. However, Mary Ann was such a notable figure at our school that even someone as oblivious as me had heard about her before we met. This was largely due to her down-to-earth yet confident demeanor and her particularly eye-catching fashion sense.

Mary Ann favored Lolita fashion, a subculture originating from Japan that draws heavily from the aesthetics of the Victorian and Rococo periods. She consistently attended class in outfits of this style. Unlike the commonly perceived emphasis on cuteness in Lolita fashion, Mary Ann's attire exuded a sense of elegance and maturity, featuring streamlined silhouettes, tea-length skirts, solid colors, and prints adorned with motifs such as crowns or fleur-de-lis.

Needless to say, she stood out wherever she went and whatever she did. How often do you encounter someone who chooses Lolita fashion as their daily attire, especially at university?

Mary Ann’s attire was certainly unique in Vietnam, where Lolita fashion is not mainstream beyond the cosplay community. Many of my acquaintances criticized her for not projecting a “suitable” image at university. While I didn't know Mary Ann personally, whenever I caught a glimpse of her, she always wore a graceful smile and radiated a sense of calm around her.

None of her outfits were provocative or messy; she likely dressed to indulge a harmless interest while leaving a lasting impression on others. In summary, if her attire was unconventional, it was undoubtedly the most appealing kind of unconventional.
