I suppose one of the biggest turning points in my life was when I graduated from university just a couple of months ago. I looked for a job and began working full-time right after that so I haven’t really had time to take a deep breath and reflect on this momentous change.
People say that university is one of the best periods of time in your life, and that you will miss it once you are employed. That’s not true for me, because I was very relieved when I finally got my degree. I didn’t get to learn a lot in school and was always irritated by the poor attitude of the staff there. Throughout 4 years, all I wanted was to get a job so that I could support myself first and then my family. And that has finally come true. I am more in my element when I’m working because I constantly learn new things and have to deal with new challenges.
But the biggest change for me is that now I can take care of myself financially and not have to rely on my family anymore. I already worked part-time when I was in university, but what I made wasn’t nearly enough to save for a rainy day, let alone support my family. So although my work isn’t all roses, I am still very glad I have made it this far. Personally I feel this change has had a very positive impact on me.

To be irritated: to be annoyed
What changes do you want to make in your life?
Probably I want to do something about my daily routine. I am quite lazy, you see, so I tend to procrastinate and leave things till the last minute. I have wasted a lot of time and also a lot of energy due to this bad habit. So I think I should make a weekly schedule and stick to it so that I can be more efficient.
Do you believe we can control our own fate? How?
No, I don’t think fate is something we can fully control. There will certainly be things that take you by surprise, whether you like it or not. Well, traffic accidents are a clear example. But it’s not all bad. Sometimes fate can lead you to good things like a business opportunity or a romantic relationship.
What three changes you would want to see in your country?
Foremost among my desires for change is an enhanced educational system. As an educator, this matter holds particular significance. My aspiration involves a curriculum overhaul aimed at equipping students with practical skills necessary for their future, rather than mere theoretical knowledge destined to fade post-examination. Additionally, I advocate for a reduction in the frequency of assessments to once or twice annually, allowing children the opportunity to preserve their innocence amidst the rigors of academia.
Another essential change I seek pertains to the improvement of public transportation alongside better infrastructure. Residing in Saigon, I grapple daily with the congestion that plagues our streets. I would readily embrace public transit were it not for the discomfort it entails. The perennially overcrowded and unpunctual buses detract from the overall commuting experience.
Lastly, I yearn for a society where kindness prevails. While it may sound cliché, the current state of interpersonal relations is concerning. Instances of recklessness on the roads, parental abuse, and unethical practices in commerce have become distressingly commonplace. It is disheartening to witness such behavior normalized. If only individuals exhibited greater empathy and consideration, these unfortunate occurrences could be mitigated.
