Upon receiving the cue card, it saddens me to admit that the first city that comes to mind is none other than my hometown, Hanoi. Having lived here since birth, I must acknowledge that this city faces significant pollution challenges.

Consider the sky, instead of clear blue, often we see a hazy sky filled with smog, even on the brightest summer days. There were moments when the city was shrouded in a thick fog. Air pollution has enveloped Hanoi, especially in areas plagued by daily traffic congestion.

This situation worsens as one can hardly spot anyone without a mask on the bustling streets, all to shield against harmful substances and fine dust particles. Some even resort to air purifiers at home to safeguard against respiratory ailments in such an environment.

Water quality suffers greatly too. I vividly recall the stench of trash from rivers along my school route. It baffles me how sewage lines lead directly into these rivers, perpetuating water contamination.

I fear a day when these rivers may be so polluted that clean water becomes a luxury commodity, a scenario seen in parts of China. Yet, I hope such a reality never materializes, trusting our authorities are diligently working to improve conditions for future generations.

As informed consumers, we should also opt for more organic or locally produced foods as these options are often more sustainably cultivated and involve less transportation, which means a lower carbon footprint harmful to the environment.

Therefore, modifications to our national energy grid and the implementation of a carbon fee and dividend are visionary policy examples that could truly make a difference by addressing the root of the issue. This isn't to diminish individual efforts but to underscore the importance of governmental decisions in the effort to improve our world.

It pains me to say that while children have contributed least to the climate crisis, they will pay the highest price.

Without effective action on global warming, extreme events such as wildfires, floods, and hurricanes could become a frightening new normal. Rising temperatures, air pollution, and violent storms pose immediate, life-threatening hazards to children, including malnutrition and increased risks of infectious diseases. This is not the world I want to envision for myself or for my children to grow up in.
