It can be seen that poverty was more prevalent among singles with or without children in Australia, compared to other family types.
In 1999, more than 1.83 million Australian families were classified as poor, representing slightly over one-tenth of all households in the nation. According to the data, one in five single parents in Australia fell below the poverty line in 1999, the highest poverty rate among various family structures. Couples with children, however, constituted the majority of disadvantaged families, accounting for about one million households. Meanwhile, 211,000 childless couples made up a relatively high proportion, at 7% of the population.
19% of unmarried Australians without children were living in poverty, whereas this percentage was significantly lower among elderly individuals – 6% for single elderly individuals and 4% for elderly couples, amounting to 54,000 and 48,000 families respectively.

IELTS Writing Task 2 (Poverty IELTS essay)
| Task 2: The ratio of poverty is increasing worldwide. What are the reasons for world poverty? What can be done to help the poor? |
Sample
There has been a dramatic increase in poverty in some developing and underdeveloped countries over the last few years. A plethora of factors may be held responsible for this, and this essay aims to set forth these reasons before possible polutions are suggested.
To begin with, most households in poor countries fail to send their children to educational institutions. Despite educational benefits in helping children to unleash their potentials, parents would like to indulge their children in some paid work, which could not help significantly in altering their present conditions. Illiteracy, as a result, leads to the ever-increasing rate of unemployment, which is another factor worsening the nations’ development. Without a well-trained workforce, a country is less likely to obtain a state of financial success, due to its unqualified trading process. Furthermore, due to uncertain circumstances of the country, there is a price hike of various necessities and the exorbitant prices of other goods and transportation also badly affected people’s financial matters.
The government can play a pivotal role to eradicate poverty from society. There should be attempts by the government to provide proper education, or at least vocational training to the needy. That, subsequently will cultivate stability in their lives through getting a good job and the national budget would also be benefited. Financial governance, in addition, should be implemented in order to prevent the decline of purchasing power of the given currency over time, making sure that people do not have to struggle to meet basic demands.
To summarize, illiteracy, unemployment, and unstable economic conditions are few factors that have contributed immensely to poverty. However, people’s suffering could be mitigated by providing them education and job opportunities, along with proper strategies against inflation.
