Every Tet, my family gathers to make banh chung, a tradition shared by many Vietnamese families during this holiday.

Banh chung, a traditional Vietnamese dish, is commonly served during Tet. To Mytourare this dish, my family purchases pork, mung beans, glutinous rice, and banana leaves. First, the ingredients are washed, and I usually handle this task. Then, the rice is soaked for 4 hours while the mung beans are steamed and dried. The pork is marinated with fish sauce and pepper to enhance its flavor.

Once all the ingredients are ready, they are wrapped in banana leaves. To achieve a perfect square shape, a mould can be used. The banh chung is then tied with thin bamboo strips to prevent the leaves from falling out and boiled for 10 to 12 hours. By midnight, the banh chung turns green as the banana leaves impart their color onto the rice. Two pieces are then placed on the altar to honor our ancestors.

Banh chung can be served in various ways, such as with soy sauce or fried and enjoyed with chili sauce.
