When faced with this question, the National Day immediately comes to mind, which I celebrated with my friends last year. Vietnam's National Day falls on September 2nd, commemorating President Ho Chi Minh's declaration of Vietnam's independence on September 2nd, 1945.
Usually, on this day, I would travel to a distant tourist destination to relax. However, in 2019, the National Day holiday was only one day, so long-distance travel was not feasible. Therefore, my friends and I came up with an innovative idea: 'Why don't we explore our own city since Hanoi was where the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed?'
With this adventurous idea, we woke up early and headed to Ba Dinh square to witness the flag-raising ceremony. It was a solemn moment to reenact and truly understand why we have this peaceful Vietnam to live in! After that, we strolled around the city for a food tour and played bowling together. One interesting thing was that during our lunch feast, the restaurant placed a small Vietnamese flag on every dish to commemorate this special day, which I found quite endearing.
Although not being able to travel far on National Day dampened my spirits, exploring Hanoi was still a delightful experience for me and my friends. I hope that next year's National Day holiday will be longer so that my adventurous group can go on a proper vacation.
