1. Do you have a large or small family?
I am currently living in an extended family including my parents, my brother and sister-in-law. And there are also my adorable niece and nephew. People often talk about the generation gap in large families, yet I haven’t seen any quarrels about distinct opinions or lifestyle. I suppose that I should feel blissful about that.
- Extended family (n): đại gia đình
- Generation gap (n): sự khác biệt giữa các thế hệ
- Quarrel (n): sự bất đồng
- Blissful (adj): may mắn
2. How much time do you spend with your family?
For normal days, I think we only go out on Sunday for coffee. If the budget allows, the whole family would go for a vacation at the beach. And then there is Tet holiday when we can wine and dine as a way to strengthen the family tie
- Wine and dine (v): ăn uống linh đình
- Family tie (n): mối liên kết gia đình
3. What activities does your family enjoy doing together?
You know, in the last day of the lunar calendar, there is a yearly comedy show called “Táo Quân” broadcasted on the central television. I love the atmosphere when we eat dinner while watching it. It feels like we are waving goodbye to the old year and all the unlucky events in the past.
- Central television (n): truyền hình trung ương
- Wave goodbye (v): chào tạm biệt
4. How well do you get along with your family?
Not all the time if I have to be candid. But I do feel at ease as most of the conflicts are too serious. To give as an illustration, we fight about trivial things like who would do the dishes, actually just my brother and I do that.
- Candid (adj): thành thật
- At ease (adj): thoải mái
- Conflict (n): mâu thuẫn
- Trivial (adj): nhỏ nhặt

Example
I am going to talk about my mom – a person I spend the most time with. Her name is Ngoc Diep, which can be literally translated into English as ‘Golden Leave’. Although she was already in her early sixties, she looked pretty much younger with a fine figure and, surprisingly, not a lot of wrinkles and grey hair to be found. She really knows how to dress smartly, and that was why my dad fell for her the very moment he laid his eyes on her when they were younger (laugh).
One of the things that most impressed me about her was the fact that she still remained perfectly exuberant and charismatic, which was quite rare for elderly people at her age. We do a lot of window-shopping every weekend, and every once in a while I and my mom go to the cinema for some musicals and romantic movies we both love.
As a young woman myself, I often confide in her whenever I have problems. Whether it betrivial matters at work or big life decisions, I always turn to her for advice. It is not an overstatement to say that without her, my life would be a huge mess.

1. How have families in your country recently evolved?
The typical age for Vietnamese women to marry remains 24, unchanged over the past decade. However, couples are now delaying parenthood compared to previous generations, largely due to financial concerns.
Young people now consider bringing up children doesn’t mean just feeding them enough food, it is about covering the best education and entertainment for them. Another point is that same-sex couples are now seen a norm in the country even though there isn’t any legal endorsement from the government, which is a good sign of a civilized society.
- Cover (v): đủ chi trả
- Norm (n): điều bình thường
- Endorsement (n): sự xác nhận
- Civilized (adj): văn minh
2. Is it necessary for husbands and wives to have different roles within the family? Why or why not?
I don’t think there should be a definite answer to this question. I regard marriage as teamwork. Some couples prefer to focus on their prospects only and if that can help them to work efficiently when taking care of the children as well as the maternal and paternal sides, they should do that. We can see a lot of traditional models which contains a husband, the breadwinner, and a housewife.
On the other hand, some favourate sharing chores together. Both the male and female go to work and look after the children. I mean the world is not chauvinist anymore, so people shouldn’t be restricted in obsolete gender roles.
3. Which is more significant to you: your family or your friends?
Choosing between them was difficult, but ultimately, I prioritize my family. Although it may sound cliché, my parents are the ones who brought me into this world and nurtured me until I became mature, both physically and mentally. Moreover, they are my source of strength. Whenever I face concerns, my parents support me and provide valuable insights.- Cliché (adj): rập khuôn
- Nurture (v): nuôi dưỡng
- Tower of strength (n): nguồn sức mạnh
- Back sb up (v): hỗ trợ ai
