The bar graph provides data on how many hours individuals of different genders and employment status allocated to recreation on a weekly basis between 1998 and 1999.
In general, men consistently had more leisure time than women, although there were no male data points in the part-time and homemaker categories. It's also evident that unemployed and retired individuals of both genders had the highest participation rates in the survey.
Based on the chart, women without jobs spent approximately 79 hours per week on leisure activities, while men in similar groups spent 3-4 hours more.
Female full-time employees were reported to enjoy the least free time, with only 38 hours per week, compared to their male counterparts’ 42 hours. The part-time group only recorded women’s figures at precisely 40 hours. In comparison, the interviewed homemakers had 50 hours to pursue their pastimes every week during the period shown.

When it comes to pursuing personal passions, some argue that hobbies should present specific challenges to be enjoyable. I completely disagree with this viewpoint.
To a certain extent, it is understandable why some complex leisure activities are preferred. Boxing requires tremendous mental and physical stamina to ensure alertness and pain endurance, for instance. Dangerous and harsh as this sport appear, most, if not all, boxers gain great satisfaction after winning every round in the ring. However, when difficulty levels exceed fighters’ expectations, they tend to quit more easily. In some cases, following hobbies out of one’s depth is likely to cause material losses. Collecting antiques has long been a lifetime pursuit of many, especially wealthy individuals. Without a thorough understanding of antique appraisal, collectors will lose considerable amounts to fake and valueless objects.
Actually, people can derive genuine pleasure from any form of recreation. Old-age pastimes, which may be considered mundane, like strolling and jogging, have been chosen by different ages because they are easy and therapeutic. Chasing a hectic daily whirlwind, some avoid experiencing more stress in their spare time, so they prefer simple leisure pursuits that can fill their timetable anytime and anywhere. More importantly, hobbies that do not require much effort to follow can still be a vast source of enjoyment. Listening to music provides a salient example of this. With a pair of earphones and a subscribed music streaming service, one can unwind by drowning themselves in the favourite melodies and lyrics.
In summary, though some challenging pastimes may appeal to their followers, the difficulty is not crucial to selecting what to spend free time on. As long as an activity suits one’s schedule and offers the benefits they seek, it can be more pleasurable.
