IELTS Writing Task 1
Task 1: The graph below shows the number of enquiries received by the Tourist Information Office in one city over a six-month period in 2011. |
Example
The line graph illustrates the number of inquiries received by Tourist Information Officers in a city through in-person visits, letters, and telephone calls from January to June 2011.
The initial impression from the chart is that the number of enquiries the Tourist Information Office received in person and by telephone saw upward trends, whilst that by letter showed an opposite pattern. It is also clear that enquiries in person had the fastest growth, surpassing the other two to become the prevalent mode.
During the first half of the period, the data on the by-telephone category topped the chart. The office received 900 calls for tourist information in January, which reached 1000 in March despite a marginal drop one month earlier. Meanwhile, the number of in-person queries doubled in March after starting from roughly 400. A downward trend, however, was recorded in the figure for the letter/email category, from nearly 800 to 700.
During the latter half of the period, the number of enquiries made in person soared to 1900 and outdid that through telephone calls, which ranked second with 300 questions fewer. By contrast, the figure for letters/emails hit a trough of under 400 in May and plateaued at the end.

IELTS Writing task 2
Task 2: In the modern world, it is possible to shop, work and communicate with people via the internet and live without any face-to-face contact with others. Is it a positive or negative development? |
Example
The rapid development of social networks, e-commerce platforms, and mobile business applications has considerably reduced in-person encounters. Considering its impact on various spheres of life, I think this trend has both positive and negative sides in equal measure.
From a business standpoint, online shopping sites like Amazon and Shopee offer many promotions, loyalty programs and product reviews, which enable shoppers to make informed and economical purchases. Online business tools also contribute to start-up trends. Instead of accumulating or borrowing capital for brick-and-mortar stores, aspiring businesspeople only need to find suppliers and promote their products through live streams, mobile advertising and influencers. However, online shopping could be problematic. Unverified shops with poor-quality goods are now ubiquitous online, and even if the customers are dissatisfied with the products, the whole process of returning the products and getting back the reimbursements can be a nuisance. There are other potential issues with online shopping, including receiving products with different materials, sizes, and designs than expected due to the lack of direct experience with the items. Illegal business activities, such as wildlife trading and cryptocurrency scams, pose another serious concern.
In addition, the Internet has a significant effect on social circles and work practices. Geographic barriers have been overcome thanks to free calls, chat programs and news feeds on social networking sites. Frequent updates about friends and family create closer bonds between people. Meanwhile, business management software, productivity-enhancing applications, and video-conferencing facilitate remote and flexible working. This helps cut operational costs and gives employees a sense of autonomy and work-life balance. Nonetheless, constant exposure to glamorised images of one’s wealth and success could cause peer pressure and feelings of inferiority among many individuals. Misunderstandings may also occur in the absence of body language as well as facial expressions.
In conclusion, technological advancements offer excellent shopping and business experiences but may also lead to dissatisfaction and financial pitfalls. Internet users can enhance their relationships and enjoy greater workplace flexibility, yet potential misunderstandings and social media-induced anxiety remain concerning.
