IELTS Writing Task 1
Task 1: The chart shows the average number of hours each day that Chinese, American, Turkish and Brazilian tourists spent doing leisure activities while on holiday in Greece in August 2019. |
Example
The bar chart provides details on the daily hours spent by tourists from China, America, Turkey, and Brazil on three activities during their vacations in Greece in August 2019.
Overall, reading books was the most common leisure activity among overseas visitors from China and America, with a striking number of hours being spent by Chinese tourists on this category. Turkish and Brazilian visitors, on the other hand, allocated slightly more time to going to the beach as opposed to the other two activities. In addition, the least popular leisure activity for all four nationalities was visiting tourist sites.
Regarding the two categories with longer hours, the daily amount of time travellers in China allocated to visiting Greek beach was 8 hours, which far exceeded that of American tourists (5 hours). Meanwhile, the average numbers of hours spent each day by visitors in the two remaining countries were slightly lower, at 4 hours each. These figures contrast starkly with those for visiting the beach which were the highest in Brazil, where visitors spent 6 hours a day, whereas the amounts of time spent on this recreational activity in Turkey, America and China were lower, with respective figures being 5, 4 and 3 hours.
As for the least common leisure activity, American and Turkish tourists each spent an average of 3 hours per day going sightseeing in Greece, compared to travellers in Brazil whose sightseeing took 2 hours each day. Notably, the lowest recorded figure occurred in Chinese tourists visiting tourist attractions, with only 1 hour being spent on this activity.

Analysis
IELTS Writing Task 2
TASK 2: Some people think that the increase in international travel has a negative impact on the environment and should be restricted. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? |
Example
The tourism industry is expanding, with international travel in particular gaining in increasing popularity in recent years. It is believed that a restriction should be imposed on frequent travel to overseas countries, which adversely affects the environment. In my opinion, while there are certain justifications for such a proposal, increased international tourist trade should be encouraged.
On the one hand, the increasing opportunities to travel internationally have detrimental impacts on environmental sustainability. This is predicated on the assumption that aircrafts are largely held responsible for releasing huge amounts of carbon dioxide emissions which are trapped in earth’s atmosphere, which in turn leads to the alarming issue of global warming. Additionally, not all overseas holidaymakers respect the tourist sites where they are setting their foot as some travellers may carelessly litter, especially in places with high concentrations of tourist activities and appealing natural attractions. On top of that, some forests, which play an important role in stabilizing the earth’s climate, may also be cut down in favor of the construction of more hotels and amenities to cater for the increasing demand for international travel. Undoubtedly, these activities would damage the once natural and unspoiled local environment, which explains why this kind of travel should be curbed.
However, these lines of reasoning are not sound as they fail to factor in the technological advancements that the government is having at its disposal. These technologies could be adopted to upgrade airplanes’ parts, which possibly minimizes the emissions of harmful gases. In addition, many airlines around the world are already implementing schemes for offsetting carbon emissions. This means that they provide their customers with the chance to take part in carbon offsetting by paying a price during each flight, and these funds are then invested in carbon neutrality initiatives and environmental projects. Obviously, there should also be strict forms of punishment for the irresponsible behaviours of tourists, which is a necessary and also compulsory duty of every travel agency.
Moreover, the restriction on the growing influx of overseas travellers would prove to be problematic. Firstly, booming tourism creates more job opportunities for local people, generates revenues and accordingly fosters economic development. Secondly, the infrastructures and facilities which were initially built to accommodate tourists would be of great benefit to the enhancement of the standard of living in local areas. Finally, as most international tourists have an interest in choosing holiday destinations in developing countries and remote areas of the world, international travel could help preserve the indigenous cultural values which could be eroded because of the unprecedented pace of globalization.
In conclusion, while it is true that the expansion of the international tourism industry could have repercussions for the state of the environment, I am of the opinion that such a recommendation should not be put into practice since modern technologies could be harnessed sustainably, travel agencies should take responsibility for controlling holiday activities of their customers, and most importantly, limiting international travel could have adverse effects on the economy, living standards and the cultures in the less economically advanced parts of the world.
