Sample Essay: The Spirit of Patriotism among the Vietnamese People
Our beloved Uncle Ho once said: 'Our people have a profound love for our country. It's a precious tradition of our people.' These words weren't said lightly. Whenever Vietnam is mentioned, people often think of a resilient yet humble nation. This nation has achieved independence and now stands as a country with immense developmental potential. This has been made possible through the unity and determination of the entire nation, fueled by a love for our country - a love that every Vietnamese person has for their homeland since birth.
'Patriotism' is a sincere and profound love for one's homeland, the Motherland. It's a sentiment of utmost sanctity and nobility for every individual, manifested not only through words but also through tangible actions. History bears witness to the patriotic spirit of our people through various periods of external aggression: Over 1000 years under Northern feudal domination, followed by invasions from the Mongol Empire, and later by the ambitions of the mighty French colonialists and the American empire to invade our land. And what were the outcomes? The glorious victory at the Bach Dang River by Ngo Quyen, the mighty Tran dynasty's three triumphs against the Mongol invaders, and the legendary victory at Dien Bien Phu that resonated globally, compelling the French colonialists to sign the Geneva Accords, ending the war in Vietnam. And then there was the 'Air Battle of Dien Bien Phu,' where Vietnam became the first country in the world to shoot down not just one, but sixty-eight B52 bombers, alongside numerous other American aircraft, over the skies of Hanoi, laying the groundwork for the Paris Peace Accords.
All these achievements stem from patriotism, an intense and profound love. A nation, though poor, where every citizen is willing to sacrifice themselves, be it their wealth, their loved ones, or even their own lives, for the nation. This is why invading forces, sooner or later, fail in their plans to conquer Vietnam. Today, even in times of peace, the spirit of patriotism is still evident among the people through their dedication to education, work, and contributing to the solid and prosperous social development, standing shoulder to shoulder with other nations in the region and the world.
Not only through practical actions recorded in history but also within each lesson in the realm of culture and art, the love for our homeland is deeply embedded. From a young age, in the teachings of our teachers, in the lullabies of our grandmothers and mothers, we are reminded that love for our country is inseparable from the place where each of us is born and raised.
'Homeland is the cluster of sweet persimmons
For children to climb and pick every day
Homeland is the path to school...
Homeland is the blue kite..
Homeland is the small boat...
If one forgets their homeland
They will not grow into a person'
(Homeland_ Đỗ Trung Quân)
And the nation also blends with the love of two souls
'Land is where he goes to school
Water is where she bathes
The Nation is where we make promises'
(The Nation_ Nguyễn Khoa Điềm)
Patriotism is like that. Sometimes very simple and plain, but sometimes it 'coalesces into an immensely powerful and grand wave'. No need for many words because in each of our hearts beats the same rhythm, each of us feels proud whenever we hear the words 'Vietnam', each of us yearns to contribute upon hearing the heroic melody of the 'Marching Song', and tears fill our eyes when we remember the fallen heroes who sacrificed for the nation's independence and freedom.
When it comes to patriotism, we often think of something grand, believing we must be a sage or perform extraordinary deeds. However, patriotism originates from love for family, for homeland, from the simple, familiar things around us. Sometimes it's just small acts like preserving the environment, living responsibly with ourselves, our community, and society, or simply, helping others; in doing so, we are also expressing our own patriotism.
So why should we have patriotism? It's because patriotism helps us live with purpose, to cherish what we have like the young man in 'Silent Sa Pa' by Nguyễn Thành Long. He 'lives alone on the peak of Yen Son, over two thousand six hundred meters high, amidst the grass, trees, and Sa Pa mountain clouds' to 'work in meteorology and global geography'. He sacrifices his youth to live meaningfully, dedicating himself to science and the nation. It's an ideal and striving life. Patriotism also helps us bond more closely, to love and support each other even more. During the U23 Asian Championship final, millions of Vietnamese people turned their attention to Thường Châu Stadium, China, to cheer on the national team, erupting with emotion with each victory. That's love, a national pride that brings together seemingly strangers, united by a common ancestry, the descendants of Lạc Hồng. Patriotism is truly miraculous!
Patriotism is also knowing how to take pride in our nation, a precious tradition of our people. But how we demonstrate it sometimes each of us needs to understand clearly and learn properly. In 2013, when China deployed the Haiyang 981 oil rig into our country's exclusive economic zone. The Party and the Government condemned this act, and so did our people because everyone knew it violated international agreements on maritime law, encroaching on Vietnam's sovereignty and jurisdiction. But there was a regrettable incident when our people vented their anger by vandalizing Chinese factories and assaulting Chinese workers. Is that true patriotism or the result of ignorance and instigation by reactionary elements? If we act in such a way, will China withdraw the Haiyang 981 rig? Will they return the Paracel Islands to us, or instead, should the government compensate the losses for Chinese companies and Vietnamese workers employed at these companies? Is that patriotism? We all love our country, but we need to be sober-minded, calm, and know how to express it in a civilized and useful manner.
As a student, the future owner of the nation. I'm exposed to a lot of information on electronic newspapers, social media, and I also realize that: We must learn to filter information and use reason to perceive and evaluate those events. We should not follow the instigations of bad elements to oppose the Government.
Patriotism is always a sacred emotion that should be present in each of us, but let's love our country wisely and start with even the smallest actions: Loving our families, loving our homeland, unity, cherishing, respecting each other, striving to learn and cultivate morality,... And I firmly believe that each of us, every Vietnamese citizen, has already and is expressing their feelings for the nation. Let's demonstrate that in the most appropriate way!
