Overall, spending on housing, transport and leisure increased, while the opposite was true for other categories, with the exception of household goods. Meanwhile, the largest proportion of weekly income was spent on food in 1968, and on leisure in 2018.
In 1968, food made up the highest proportion of total expenditure, at 35%, decreasing significantly to around half that figure 50 years later. A similar trend was seen in the percentage of expenditure on personal goods, and clothing and footwear, with the initial figures in 1968 of 10% and 7% respectively. Likewise, the figures for fuel and power spending dropped slightly from 6% to 4% of the total expenditure.
One-tenth of the weekly expenditure was housing in 1968, almost doubling 50 years later. Similarly, the figures for transport and leisure were almost the same, at approximately 8% in 1968, after which they increased to 14% and 22% respectively, in 2018. Meanwhile, the figure for household goods remained stable at 8% over the period.
