Storytelling is among the activities parents can engage in with their children. However, there is a division of opinion regarding whether adults should actually engage in this practice or not. In this regard, I am inclined to advocate for the idea of reading stories to children whenever feasible as parents, although the opposing viewpoint also warrants examination.
On one hand, there are grounds for parents to avoid storytime with their children and instead allow them to watch TV or read books independently. By doing so, adults would have more personal time, or at least, be able to allocate more time to work to support the family. However, this inevitably occurs at the expense of the sacred bond between parent and child. For children who did not experience proper attachment, trusting their parents later in life might pose a challenge, as does forming bonds with their own children. The lack of intimacy resulting from this seemingly minor decision can be worrisome.
On the other hand, storytime between parent and child is beneficial despite some reservations. While adults will certainly sacrifice time, this trade-off is usually justified, as it fosters stronger family ties. Children will trust their guardians more and be more inclined to reciprocate kindness toward their parents and their own children later on. Additionally, storytelling aids in the development of a child's imagination and language skills, among other facets. Listening to tales of imaginative characters can fuel children's creativity, and their vocabulary, likewise, expands through exposure to new words. Therefore, any form of storytime clearly appears more beneficial than none at all.
In conclusion, while both sides of the argument have their merits, I am of the opinion that reserving time for storytelling with children is the preferred choice for parents. Due to the benefits in bonding and the development of various skills in children, adults are encouraged to read stories to their offspring.
