Wars are a harsh reality of life. What's even worse is the prospect of being conscripted into military service, even if you are fundamentally opposed to war. Many nations mandate military service for men (and sometimes women) during wartime or even during peacetime. Although active conscription may no longer exist in some places, all male US citizens and certain male immigrants aged 18 to 25 are required to register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday for a potential future draft.
