I guess there are several reasons for their popularity, but the key one is that these competitions provide immense inspiration and motivation to the audience. Watching contestants rise from obscurity to fame makes us believe that we, too, can overcome any challenges in life and achieve greatness. Music shows like The Voice or American Idol particularly resonate with dreamers, attracting a wide audience.
