1. Take up là gì? 

Theo Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries, “take up” là một phrasal verb mang đa nghĩa. Dưới đây 8 ý nghĩa của “take up” dựa trên từ điển Oxford.

1.1 Take up 

• To continue, especially starting after somebody/something else has finished

When “take up” stands alone and is not accompanied by a preposition or any object (something / somebody), this phrasal verb is used to indicate a continuation, especially starting something after someone or something else has ended. 

Ví dụ: The judge took up after the lawyer had presented his case. (Thẩm phán tiếp tục sau khi luật sư đã trình bày xong vụ án của mình.)

1.2 Take up something 

Khi “take up” đi kèm với một đối tượng nào đó (something), nó sẽ mang nhiều ý nghĩa khác nhau tùy thuộc vào ngữ cảnh của tình huống giao tiếp. Dưới đây là 8 cách dùng của “take up” khi đi với “something”

• To fill or use an amount of space or time

It roughly translates to using to fill or occupy a space or time.

Ví dụ: The new sofa takes up a lot of space in the living room. (Chiếc ghế sofa mới chiếm rất nhiều không gian trong phòng khách.)

•  To learn or start to do something

It roughly translates to using to learn or start doing something.

Ví dụ: After retiring, she took up a new hobby as painting. (Sau khi nghỉ hưu, cô ấy bắt đầu một sở thích mới đó là vẽ tranh.)

• To join in singing or saying something

Roughly translated as used to indicate participating in singing or saying something.

Ví dụ: The crowd took up the chant during the protest. (Đám đông đã tham gia hô khẩu hiệu trong cuộc biểu tình.)

• To continue something that somebody else has not finished, or that has not been mentioned for some time

Roughly translated as used to indicate continuing something that someone has not finished, or continuing something that has not been mentioned for a while.

Ví dụ: After a long hiatus, the author took up the novel she had started years ago. (Sau một thời gian dài gián đoạn, tác giả tiếp tục viết cuốn tiểu thuyết mà bà đã bắt đầu nhiều năm trước.)

• To move into a particular position

Roughly translated as used to indicate moving to a specific position.

Ví dụ: He took up his position at the entrance to welcome the guests. (Anh ấy đứng vào vị trí ở lối vào để đón khách.)

• To accept something that is offered or available

Roughly translated as used to indicate accepting something that is offered or available.

Ví dụ: She took up the job offer without hesitation. (Cô ấy chấp nhận lời mời làm việc mà không hề do dự.)

• To make something such as a piece of clothing shorter

Roughly translated as used to indicate doing something shorter, like wearing shorter clothes.

Ví dụ: She took up the hem of her dress to make it shorter. (Cô ấy rút ngắn gấu váy của mình để nó ngắn hơn.)

2. Các cụm từ phổ biến với Take up 

• Take up with somebody = to begin to be friendly with somebody, especially somebody with a bad reputation.

Used to indicate the action of becoming friendly with someone, especially someone with a bad reputation.

Ví dụ: She has taken up with a new group of friends since she moved to the city. (Cô ấy đã kết bạn với một nhóm bạn mới từ khi chuyển đến thành phố.)

• Take somebody up on something = to question somebody about something, because you do not agree with them.

Used to indicate the action of asking someone about something because you disagree with them.

Ví dụ: I had to take Tom up on his statement about the project, as I found several inconsistencies in his argument. (Tôi đã phải hỏi Tom về phát biểu của anh ấy về dự án, vì tôi thấy có nhiều điểm không nhất quán trong lập luận của anh ấy.)

• Take  up to = reach or consume a maximum amount.

Achieve or consume a maximum amount of time, space, or resources.

Ví dụ: The installation process might take up to 30 minutes. (Quá trình cài đặt có thể mất đến 30 phút.)

• Take up the baton = accept a particular duty or responsibility.

Taking on responsibility or a role from someone else.

Ví dụ: After the previous director retired, she took up the baton and led the company to success as now. (Sau khi giám đốc trước nghỉ hưu, cô ấy tiếp nhận trách nhiệm và dẫn dắt công ty đến thành công như bây giờ.)

• Take up a hobby = start a new hobby.

Embarking on a new hobby.

Ví dụ: He decided to take up a hobby to reduce stress and improve his work-life balance. (Anh ấy quyết định bắt đầu một sở thích mới để giảm căng thẳng và cải thiện cân bằng giữa công việc và cuộc sống.)

• Take up residence = start living in a particular place.

Moving to live in a new place.

Ví dụ: They took up residence in a old house in the countryside. (Họ đã chuyển đến sống trong một ngôi nhà cổ ở vùng nông thôn.)

• Take up arms = begin fighting.

Starting a fight, often in a military or resistance context.
