Cowherd beside the old ox
After returning home, the sister-in-law continued mistreating Ox Herder. She often plotted against him, but the old ox always found ways to help. Frustrated, the sister-in-law eventually drove Ox Herder out, who only asked to take the old ox with him. One day, Weaver Girl and celestial fairies descended to Earth and bathed in the river. With the old ox's assistance, Ox Herder befriended Weaver Girl, and they developed a deep bond. Weaver Girl secretly descended to Earth, becoming Ox Herder's wife. She brought silkworms from the heavens, taught the villagers sericulture, silk reeling, and weaving, creating delicate and beautiful silk. Despite their blissful family life, the heavenly emperor discovered their love. The Queen Mother of the West descended, separating the loving couple. Unable to ascend to heaven, Ox Herder received advice from the old ox: after its death, he should make shoes from its hide to reach the heavens. Following the advice, Ox Herder, wearing ox-hide shoes, ascended on clouds to find Weaver Girl. As Ox Herder neared Weaver Girl, the Queen Mother created a river with turbulent waves. They were stranded on opposite sides of the river, only able to gaze at each other, shedding tears. Their steadfast and enduring love moved the celestial birds. Thousands of them flocked to build the Bridge of Magpies, allowing Ox Herder and Weaver Girl to meet on the seventh day of the seventh month every year.
The Touching Origin of Ox Tears Rain
On the farewell day, Ox Herder and Weaver Girl tearfully bid farewell. Their tears fell to Earth, turning into rain called 'mưa ngâu' (ox tears rain). People refer to them as Mr. and Mrs. Ngâu. Thus, the Qixi Festival was born.
