Sử dụng khi nói về một sự thật đã xảy ra trong quá khứ

Ví dụ: Linebacker II Campaign was the last military campaign of the United States against the Democratic Republic of Vietnam during the Vietnam War. (Chiến dịch Linebacker 2 là chiến dịch quân sự cuối cùng của Hoa Kỳ chống lại Việt Nam Dân chủ Cộng hoà trong Chiến tranh Việt Nam.)

Sử dụng khi nói về những sự kiện chính trong một câu chuyện

Ví dụ: My house was built in 10 months. (Ngôi nhà của tôi đã được xây dựng trong 10 tháng.)

Sử dụng khi nói về sự kiện hoặc trạng thái đã xuất hiện lâu dài trong quá khứ

Ví dụ: The rats ate up all the food stored in the warehouse. (Lũ chuột đã gặm nhấm hết tất cả lương thực dự trữ bên trong kho.)

Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn

Dấu hiệu nhận biết: từ chỉ thời gian trong quá khứ: 

Yesterday (tối hôm qua) hoặc yesterday + morning/ afternoon (sáng hôm qua/ chiều hôm qua)

Ví dụ: She didn’t join the meeting yesterday. (Cô ấy không tham gia buổi họp ngày hôm qua.)

Last + từ chỉ thời gian (Last week, last month, …)

Ví dụ: I finished the English course last month. (Tôi đã hoàn thành khóa học Tiếng Anh vào tháng trước.)

In + một năm ở quá khứ

Ví dụ: I graduated in 2009. (Tôi đã tốt nghiệp đại học vào năm 2009.)

When + khoảng thời gian cụ thể trong quá khứ

Ví dụ: I wasn’t here when he came at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon. (Tôi không ở đây khi anh ấy tới lúc 5 giờ chiều hôm qua.)

Today: hôm nay (chỉ sử dụng dành cho hành động đã xảy ra vào ngày hôm nay và trước thời điểm nói)

Ví dụ: I swam in today morning. (Tôi đã bơi vào buổi sáng hôm nay.)

Thời gian + ago: bao lâu về trước

Ví dụ: I lived in London 5 years ago. (Tôi sống ở London vào 5 năm trước.)

Dấu hiệu nhận biết: Dùng For + khoảng thời gian trong quá khứ

Ví dụ:

• She taught Karate for 4 years. (Cô ấy đã dạy Karate được 4 năm.) - Hiện tại cô ấy không dạy Karate nữa.

• He worked as a dancer for 5 years. (Anh ấy đã làm vũ công được 5 năm.) - Hiện tại anh ấy không làm vũ công nữa.

Dấu hiệu nhận biết: Sử dụng Used to + V_inf

Ví dụ:

• She used to go to work by car. (Cô ấy từng đi làm bằng xe ô tô.)

• He used to run fastest in our class before the joint injury. (Anh ấy từng là người chạy nhanh nhất ở lớp trước khi bị chấn thương khớp.)
