Sample Answer for the Community Topic
1. What social issues exist in your nation?
In my view, my country faces several urgent challenges. Primarily, the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented rise in unemployment, forcing many into poverty and consequently escalating crime rates. People are more likely to resort to theft and other crimes to survive. Despite various social distancing measures and lockdowns, Vietnam continues to struggle with these issues.
- pressing problems: các vấn đề cấp bách
- grapple with: vật lộn giải quyết
- First and foremost: trước nhất
- unprecedented: chưa từng có
- push someone onto skid row: đẩy ai vào cảnh nghèo khó
- surge: sự tăng nhanh
- have a hard time + Ving: gặp khó khăn khi làm việc gì
2. How can poverty be alleviated?
There are various solutions to lift people out of poverty. One practical approach is to improve access to education. This not only equips those on the poverty line with skills to earn higher incomes but also helps them mitigate vulnerability and risk. However, these efforts would be ineffective if those in need are not actively involved in the poverty alleviation process.
- feasible: khả thi
- those living on the poverty line, the have-nots: người nghèo
- safeguard against: bảo vệ khỏi cái gì
- vulnerability: dễ bị làm hại
- futile: vô ích, không hiệu quả
- poverty alleviation, lift people out of poverty: xóa đói giảm nghèo
3. What are your thoughts on social philanthropy?
In my opinion, charity benefits not only the most disadvantaged in society but also donors. Supporting those in need can provide a sense of purpose and satisfaction, potentially leading to a meaningful life. However, there are individuals who engage in charitable acts solely for personal motives. For instance, several celebrities in Vietnam faced criticism for lack of transparency in handling donated funds.
- the most vulnerable: những người dễ bị hại
- A fulfilled life: cuộc sống viên mãn
- personal gains: lợi ích cá nhân
- backlash: sự chỉ trích
- transparency: sự minh bạch
4. What are the distinctions between minor and major offenses?
As far as I know, the primary difference between these types of offenses lies in the severity of penalties. A misdemeanor, such as assault or petty theft, typically results in fines or imprisonment for less than a year. In contrast, those convicted of felonies may face life imprisonment or even the death penalty. However, these penalties can vary from one country to another.
- Severity: mức độ nghiêm trọng
- misdemeanour: tội nhỏ
- commit a felony: phạm tội lớn
- life imprisonment: tù chung thân
- death penalty: tử hình
- vary: khác nhau
