1. Topic My Homeland – Sample IELTS Speaking Part 1
1.1. Which part of your country would you choose to live in?
Sample 1: If I could choose, I’d definitely want to reside somewhere on the coast, but it also has to be near a major city. I think Da Nang city fits the bill. It has phenomenal beaches while being one of the most developed cities in Vietnam.
- To fit the bill: thích hợp
- Phenomenal (adj): tuyệt vời
Example 2: If I were to select a place to reside in Vietnam, without a doubt, my choice would be Hue, a city situated in central Vietnam. My preference for Hue originates from its abundant historical sites, lively street food culture, verdant landscapes, wide boulevards, charming dessert shops along the riverbank, and the genuinely warm-hearted people I encountered there.
In contrast to the bustling cities of HCMC or Hanoi, Hue provides a tranquil atmosphere, offering ample space for everyone, whether driving, cycling, or simply taking a leisurely stroll. The quieter environment means less traffic concerns, avoiding crowded situations, and experiencing less pressure to engage in constant conversations or maintain a constant smile.
1.2. What makes you proud of your country?
Sample 1: We have a unique cuisine with excellent dishes. I know that Pho and Banh Mi have become mainstream. But trust me, we have scores of other dishes that are just as delicious if not more.
- Cuisine (n): nền ẩm thực
- Scores of + n: hàng chục thứ gì đó
Example 2: There are numerous reasons why I take immense pride in being Vietnamese. Firstly, my admiration for Vietnam largely stems from its culinary wonders. Vietnamese cuisine features unparalleled dishes like Pho, Bun Cha, Banh Cuon, among others, which not only taste amazing but are also remarkably healthy and affordable. Additionally, Vietnam boasts breathtaking landscapes and picturesque destinations.
For example, despite being the capital city known for its vibrant urban lifestyle, Hanoi offers tranquil and picturesque spots hidden in various corners, such as The Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, Lang Bac, and more.
1.3. Are you familiar with your country's history?
Sample 1: It depends on the period. It is said that we have 4000 years of history so it is difficult to know all the eras well. My hometown is Hue and it used to be the capital of the Nguyen dynasty, the last monarchy of my country, so when it comes to history, I tend to read more and know more about the Nguyen dynasty and the late 18th century.
- Monarchy (n): chế độ quân chủ
Example 2: While I have some basic knowledge about my country's history, I wouldn't claim to be an expert. Vietnam's history is largely marked by conflicts and wars.
Throughout our history, Vietnam has faced significant challenges such as defending our borders against China, fighting for independence from French colonization, and eventually achieving full autonomy despite challenges posed by the United States for the nation's genuine independence.
1.4. Do you plan to remain in your country in the future?
This is a rather unique question. Certainly, I intend to remain in my homeland. However, I also look forward to exploring other countries as a tourist to broaden my understanding of different cultures.
