Vietnamese people have always been exposed to traditional teaching methods where teachers are the center, cramming too much knowledge, making mistakes is 'sinful', pressure, coping with learning, teachers explaining everything and students just listen. This method has made English a 'nightmare' for many generations of Vietnamese people. So what is the method to change this situation?
Teacher as the center!
It can be seen that some students really like this teaching method of the teacher because their way of speaking is very attractive, but they do not realize that they are going to study, not watch a comedy show. The more students have the opportunity to communicate in the language they are learning, the more progress they will make. Teachers are only there to guide the students. Teachers have 'wasted' time activities... like teachers photocopying exercises and giving them to students to do in class. This is completely a waste of time. What students need here is to develop language communication skills right in the classroom, while exercises should be done at home.
Teaching and learning foreign languages in Vietnam in general and English in particular, mostly do not achieve high efficiency. Why? Perhaps everyone understands, from textbooks, inaccurate teaching research methods. This leads to countless consequences that learners bear.
Students are the center and the 'actors'!
TPR is a method that helps overcome all the above disadvantages, focusing on students and helping them develop their second language naturally. The founder of this method is psychologist James Asher, based on three principles: learning through listening, applying actions and images to remember, a comfortable learning environment, no pressure.
The scientific basis of TPR is to use the right brain, improve listening ability, memorize vocabulary subconsciously, kinetic style, memorize internal vocabulary, move the whole body along with the brain and use the right brain. TPR creates a comfortable learning environment, lots of energy for learners, helps learners remember knowledge longer because they practice real situations.
TPR has many differences compared to traditional methods such as students being the center, students actively absorbing knowledge, making mistakes is just part of learning, the classroom atmosphere is comfortable without coercion. Especially, teachers encourage students to find answers, students will be the 'actors' and the ones who take action.
Every lesson at Mytour, students are required to present and give their opinions.
Recognizing the effectiveness of this method, Mytour International English Center has applied TPR to students in learning English by creating the Action Vocabulary learning method (learning vocabulary through action). Learning and reviewing vocabulary through activities, games, challenges, competitions between groups. Students learn English in a comfortable, pressure-free environment. Students are encouraged to speak English rather than forced to speak English. Teachers use actions and easy-to-understand English language to help students understand the lesson.
