Bethesda Studios, known for iconic franchises such as The Elder Scrolls, Doom, and Fallout, is discontinuing its PC launcher on May 11. This means purchasing, downloading, or playing Bethesda games through the app will no longer be possible. Fortunately, players can freely transfer their purchased Bethesda games, DLCs, save files, and specific account data like in-game currencies for Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls Online to Steam.
Although the Bethesda Launcher will cease operations on May 11, the company emphasizes this is not a transfer deadline. You can still move your games and data to Steam even after the launcher is discontinued.
However, since your Bethesda games and data will be unavailable until transferred to Steam, it’s advisable to complete the process sooner rather than later. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you:
Step 1: Get Your Steam Account Ready
Start by ensuring you have a Steam account to transfer your Bethesda data to. If you’re a PC gamer, you likely already have one, but if not, you can set up a new account via the Steam website and download the Steam app here.
Note that Steam is your only option for this transfer. You cannot move your games to other platforms such as the Epic Games Store or GOG, nor to consoles like PlayStation or Xbox, even though Bethesda’s games are available on those platforms.
Step 2: Transfer Your Bethesda Games to Steam
Once Steam is installed and set up, you can proceed with transferring your data:
Visit Bethesda’s account transfer tool online and log in using your Bethesda.net credentials.
After logging in, click on your account name in the top-right corner and choose “Transfer Library.”
Follow the instructions displayed on the screen and click “Start Steam Transfer” when prompted.
Wait for the transfer process to complete.
If you encounter any problems, refer to Bethesda’s support FAQs for assistance.
Once the transfer is complete, your data will be migrated to Steam, and all purchased games and DLCs will be added to your Steam library. However, do not launch the games just yet! There’s one more crucial step to transfer your save files if you wish to resume your progress.
Step 3: Transfer Your Save Data to Steam
While this step is optional, it’s highly recommended if you’ve invested significant time in games like Fallout 4 or are midway through Doom Eternal’s campaign and don’t want to restart. Note that online data for games like The Elder Scrolls Online or multiplayer stats for Doom or Quake will transfer automatically.
The method for manually transferring save files varies depending on the game. Bethesda provides a detailed guide with step-by-step instructions for each supported title.
After completing all the steps above, you’re ready to enjoy your Bethesda games on Steam and can safely remove the Bethesda Launcher from your computer.
