I. Cấu trúc suggest

Cấu trúc 1: Gợi ý + danh từ/cụm danh từ (Suggest + danh từ/cụm danh từ)

Trong trường hợp này, danh từ hoặc cụm danh từ đóng vai trò làm tân ngữ của động từ suggest.

Ví dụ:

• I suggest a white wine with this dish. (Tôi đề nghị dùng rượu vang trắng với món ăn này.)
• She suggested some milk with bread for breakfast. (Cô ấy gợi ý một chút sữa với bánh mì cho bữa sáng).
• He suggested a song of his favorite singer. (Anh ấy đề xuất một bài hát của ca sĩ anh yêu thích)

Trong trường hợp muốn đề cập đến đối tượng nhận được lời đề nghị, ta dùng “suggest sth to sb”.

Ví dụ:

• My teacher suggested a course I could sign up for at the end of the year.

(My teacher proposed a course for me to register for at the end of the year.)

• Can you suggest a good dictionary to me? (Bạn có thể gợi ý một cuốn từ điển tốt cho tôi được không?)
• She suggested an amazing book to him. (Cô ấy gợi ý một cuốn sách hay cho tôi)

Structure 2: Suggest + that-clause (Suggest + clause “that”)

When making a proposal or suggestion, we can use the clause “that” following the verb suggest. In less formal situations, we can omit “that” from the clause.

Ví dụ:

• I suggest (that) we go out to have dinner. I know a very good restaurant. (Tôi đề nghị chúng ta ra ngoài ăn tối. Tôi biết 1 nhà hàng rất ngon.)
• He suggested (that) everybody go camping in the next summer. (Anh ấy gợi ý mọi người có thể đi cắm trại vào mùa hè tới).
• They suggest (that) all pages are numbered from 1 to 20. (Họ đề nghị các trang phải được đánh số từ 1 đến 20).

Chú ý: Trong trường hợp dùng mệnh đề “that” thì động từ theo sau luôn ở dạng nguyên mẫu không “to”.

Ví dụ:

• The doctor suggests that he (should) lose some weights. (Bác sĩ khuyên anh ấy nên giảm cân).

Her doctor suggested she should cut back on work and exercise more (The doctor advised her to work less and exercise more).

• They suggested that I (should) practice speaking English more. (Họ gợi ý rằng tôi nên tập nói tiếng Anh nhiều hơn).

Structure 3: Suggest + V-ing

We can use V-ing after the verb suggest when referring to an action without specifying who will perform that action.

Ví dụ:

• He suggested travelling together for safety, since the area was so dangerous. (Anh ấy đề xuất nên đi du lịch cùng nhau cho an toàn vì khu vực đó rất nguy hiểm.)
• I suggested going swimming in summer. (Tôi đề xuất đi bơi vào mùa hè).
• She suggested reading more books to broaden the mind. (Cô ấy đề xuất nên đọc nhiều sách hơn để mở rộng kiến thức).

Structure 4: Suggest + wh-question word (Suggest + question word)

We can also use question words like where, what, when, who, how after the verb suggest.

Ví dụ:

• Could you suggest where I might be able to buy a nice T-shirt for my boyfriend? (Bạn có thể gợi ý cho tôi 1 chỗ để tôi có thể mua 1 cái áo thun thật đẹp cho bạn trai của tôi không?)
• Could you suggest where we can eat dinner tonight? (Bạn có thể gợi ý xem tối nay ta ăn tối ở đâu được không?

Chú ý: KHÔNG dùng to_V sau suggest:

Ví dụ:

✔️ She recommends getting the car fixed as soon as possible.

❌ She suggests having the car repaired as soon as possible.

(She suggests having the car repaired as soon as possible).

In addition to the meaning of suggesting or proposing, the verb suggest also means to imply.

Ví dụ:

Are you implying that I’m lazy? (Bạn ám chỉ rằng tôi lười không?)

The phrase suggest itself to somebody means to suddenly come up with something.

Ví dụ:

A solution suddenly occurred to me. (Tôi đột nhiên nghĩ ra 1 giải pháp.) 

II. Usage of the suggest structure

The suggest structure is often used in the following five cases:

1. Structure suggest + gerund

Primarily used in serious situations, to speak in general terms, without implying any specific person 

Ví dụ:

'Why propose a visit to Yellowstone in August when the park is most crowded?' (Tại sao đề xuất đi Yellowstone vào tháng Tám khi công viên đông người nhất?) 

This structure is also used when emphasizing the suggestion itself, not to emphasize the person performing the action in that suggestion: 

'He also recommends accompanying your mother to her appointments.' (Anh ấy cũng đề xuất đi cùng mẹ đến cuộc hẹn của cô ấy.)

 Sometimes writers or speakers want to avoid implying that the reader has a problem because some suggestions can make the listener feel embarrassed, so we use the suggest + gerund structure:

'We recommend making plans in advance.' (Chúng tôi đề xuất lập kế hoạch trước.) 

In all the examples above, the speaker avoids saying 'I suggest (that) you...' because they don't want to imply that you, the reader, are being affected by the issue being discussed, to avoid making the reader annoyed.

The suggest + gerund grammatical structure is typically used in writing, as writing is often more formal than speaking.

2. Suggest that S + V

Dùng cấu trúc 'gợi ý rằng S + V' khi muốn khuyên trực tiếp một cá nhân hoặc một nhóm người cụ thể.

Ví dụ:

Bác sĩ gợi ý với bệnh nhân: 'I suggest that you increase physical activity to control your blood pressure.' (đề xuất rằng bạn tăng cường hoạt động thể chất để kiểm soát huyết áp của bạn) 

'Chúng tôi đề xuất rằng đảng cầm quyền hành động mạnh mẽ hơn để không bị loại khỏi vị trí trong cuộc bầu cử tới.' (We suggest that the ruling party act more decisively in order not to be voted out of office in the next election.) 

Không có 's' ở các từ 'physical activity' hoặc 'study', tuy nhiên người Bắc Mỹ có thể nói 'I suggested that John engages (hoặc exercised) in more physical activity', nhưng cách diễn đạt này không chuẩn và nên tránh sử dụng trong văn viết. 

Ví dụ: I suggested that John should exercise more." (Anh thường dùng should sau suggested that)

Khi sử dụng hiện tại đơn với 'suggest' ('I am suggesting that...) (tôi đang gợi ý rằng...), cho thấy người nói muốn gợi ý điều gì đó hoặc giải thích tại sao họ gợi ý như vậy. 

Ví dụ:

I'm proposing that we take action to resolve this disagreement, although I haven't yet formulated a precise solution.

(Tôi đang đề xuất làm một điều gì đó để chấm dứt sự bất đồng này, tuy nhiên tôi vẫn chưa có một giải pháp cụ thể)

Trong văn nói, thường người ta sử dụng cấu trúc suggest that như sau

Ví dụ:

I proposed that he invest in a new residence.

=I recommended that he purchase a new dwelling.

=I proposed that he acquire a new residence.

=I recommended his acquisition of a new residence.

Cấu trúc suggest được sử dụng để đề xuất, tiến cử (một người) phù hợp với một chức vụ hoặc gợi ý (một vật) có thể sử dụng cho mục đích nào đó.

Trong trường hợp này, chúng ta sử dụng cấu trúc 'suggest smt/sb for smt'

Ví dụ:

We recommended him for the position of Minister of the Interior. (Chúng tôi đã tiến cử ông cho vị trí Bộ trưởng Nội vụ) 

(Vật phẩm, sự việc) cho thấy ai đó đã thực hiện điều gì

Ví dụ:

The glove indicates that she was present at the crime scene. (Chiếc găng tay cho thấy cô ấy đã có mặt tại hiện trường vụ án.)

Gợi ý gián tiếp, nói bóng gió; không nói trực tiếp, không diễn đạt rõ ràng

Ví dụ:

I didn't instruct him to depart, I simply hinted at it. (Tôi không bảo anh ta ra đi, tôi chỉ gợi ý thôi.)
