You may not be aware, but Chrome integrates several hidden features. One of these features is the password generator used to create strong passwords when users create new accounts. Additionally, the Smart Lock password manager stores these passwords on Google.com for future access.
In the following article, Mytour will guide you on how to use the integrated password generator on Google Chrome.
In the face of continuous security breaches and data violations, using strong, unique passwords across the websites you visit is crucial to avoid falling victim to cyber attacks. However, the challenge arises in remembering all the passwords for each site you access without employing a password manager.
The market offers a variety of password managers with advanced features to choose from. However, if you're a Chrome user, Google also integrates a password generator into the Smart Lock password manager for users.
How to Use the Integrated Password Generator on Google Chrome
Activating the Password Generator on Chrome
Activate Chrome's password generator and manager by first enabling password sync through Google account login. Visit Chrome settings (
After signing in, a notification confirms that sync is enabled. The settings screen displays, indicating Sync is active.
Next, enable the password creation feature from the experimental features screen. Enter chrome://flags in Chrome’s address bar to access and activate this feature from the list shown.
Search for 'password' in the Search flags box to find the Password generation flag. Enable this flag, and Chrome will suggest restarting the browser. Click Relaunch Now to implement the change.
After Chrome finishes restarting, the feature will be activated, and you can use the integrated password generator on Google Chrome for your account.
Create a password using Chrome on the account creation screen
Once you activate the Password generation flag, if Google displays a password field on the account creation screen, click on that field, and it will automatically generate and display a password on the screen. However, Chrome may not always detect the fields and generate passwords.
In such cases, you'll need to right-click in Chrome, and select Generate password... as shown in the image below.
Once the password is generated, Chrome displays a dialog box with the new password.
Clicking the password autofills it into both the password and verification fields, and stores it in Google's Smart Lock for automatic sign-ins on Chrome and other signed-in devices.
Access the list of saved passwords in Smart Lock by visiting https://passwords.google.com or chrome://settings/passwords in Chrome.
Utilize Google's Smart Lock password manager for secure sign-ins.
Whenever you create a password or log in and save it, Google's Smart Lock stores this data for automatic insertion into login forms on future visits.
A small key icon on the address bar indicates if Smart Lock has saved the password for the site you're visiting.
For multiple accounts on the same site, clicking the key icon displays a list of all saved accounts, allowing you to choose which one to log in with.
Manage saved passwords by visiting https://passwords.google.com or chrome://settings/passwords in Chrome, where you can disable auto-login, view any password, and see saved account details.
Mytour has shown you how to use Google Chrome's built-in password generator. While Chrome's password generator and Smart Lock are useful, they don't match the functionality of third-party password managers due to limitations like the inability to edit passwords without deleting and re-saving the entire account.
Additionally, you can track your saved passwords on Chrome by following our guide on viewing saved passwords.
For more comprehensive features, consider third-party password managers like LastPass, Dashlane, and KeePass. Chrome's password manager remains a solid choice for saving and auto-filling passwords for each site you visit.
Besides using password managers, ensure your account and personal information's security by creating a strong id, nickname, or username, 'Strong Username'.
