Koh Kood, also known as Koh Kut, is a large forest-covered island situated near Cambodia. Although not yet a mainstream destination in Thai tourism, this island was once a hideout for pirates from Cambodia.
Reasons to visit Koh Kood

The absence of Thai tourists and its untouched, pirate-like ambiance are major draws for the island. Tourism is underdeveloped here, as the eastern part of the island houses a military base. This means no resorts can be found on the eastern side. The island's isolation made it a favored spot for pirates to hide their treasures, and it’s also why travelers hesitate to endure the challenging journey by car and boat from Bangkok to Koh Kood.

Best time to visit Koh Kood
While many Thai islands remain peaceful year-round, Koh Kood is virtually closed for six months. During this period, strong ocean currents make the beaches windy and the waves unpredictable. Ferries to the island operate infrequently, primarily serving locals. The ideal time to visit is between November and April annually. During peak season, travel costs to Koh Kood are slightly higher compared to other islands.

Traveling to Koh Kood
To reach Koh Kood, you’ll need to transit through Trat town in the southeast. To get to Trat, you can travel from Bangkok (or Pattaya) if you’re exploring Thailand from the capital.

From Bangkok to Trat
At the MiniBus Mochit station, you can purchase a bus ticket from Bangkok to Trat for 270 baht at ticket counter C. Buses run multiple times daily. The journey takes approximately 5 hours, including a lunch stop, and will drop you off at Trat bus station. If you arrive before 1 PM, you can continue your trip to Koh Kood the same day by taking a ferry. However, staying overnight in Trat is recommended for safety.

From Trat to Koh Kood
After waking up in Trat, take a songthaew to the Ferry Princess office to buy a ferry ticket to Koh Kood. The ferry departs from Laem Sok pier. Tickets cost 350 baht per person, and the ferry ride lasts 1.5 hours. The ferry service includes a transfer from the pier to your accommodation. Once on the island, you’ll need to rent a motorbike to get around Koh Kood, as the island is vast and attractions are spread out.

Experiences on Koh Kood Island
Visit Klong Chao Waterfall
This is the island’s most famous waterfall, often crowded during midday. However, early mornings offer a serene experience with the forest all to yourself. The waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery. If you visit during the off-season, you can also hike to Khlong Yai Kee and Huang Nam Khiao waterfalls.

Explore the Fishing Village
There’s a fishing village called Laem Ao Yai. This is where former pirates gathered when they realized tourism could be more profitable than piracy.

Watch the Sunset at Sunset Beach
This beach is the perfect spot to swim during sunset and enjoy refreshing drinks.
Snorkeling
Koh Rok Marine Park is the ideal snorkeling location on the island. You can explore the crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life.

Kayaking or Paddleboarding
Renting a kayak costs around 300 baht per hour. Take advantage of this for an exciting adventure on the water.
Thailand’s tourism allure extends beyond its popular destinations. The country also intrigues with its secluded islands. Visit Koh Kood to experience an island once used by pirates to hide their treasures!
