Hong Ngai is a quaint hamlet in Bac Yen town, Bac Yen district, Son La. Predominantly inhabited by the Hmong community, it still retains its unique charm of primitive life in harmony with the forested mountains. Hong Ngai

Like many other villages across the S-shaped land, Hong Ngai has its own unique story. It tells of the hardworking Hmong, Dao, and Ha Nhi peoples, living peacefully with their fields, until sudden cold spells brought by the harsh winter made the bamboo and thatch houses inadequate, food supplies dwindled, and the cold and hunger led to the loss of many lives in the village.

Furthermore, bandits raided and devastated the village, cries of the people pierced the heavens. Moved by their plight, the deity Hong Ngai was sent to teach the villagers how to build sturdy earthen houses to withstand the cold and deter invaders, leading the villagers to honor the deity by naming their village Hong Ngai.
