What is 'the same'?

In Vietnamese, 'The same' means 'giống nhau'. It's used to compare two or more objects or phenomena that share similar characteristics to highlight their resemblance.

The role of 'the same' in a sentence

The same như một tính từ trong câu: Dùng để mô tả và nhấn mạnh điều gì đó không thay đổi. Hoặc được dùng để nhấn mạnh một điều liên quan đến một người hoặc vật cụ thể, đặc biệt.

For example, I enjoy waking up at the identical hour every day. Tôi thích thức dậy vào cùng một thời điểm mỗi ngày.

The same như một đại từ trong câu (The same thing): Dùng để chỉ điều vừa được đề cập. Hạn chế lặp từ.

How to use 'the same' in a sentence

'The same' is used as an adjective

The same will be used as an adjective in the following 2 cases: 

• Được dùng để diễn tả một điều gì đó không thay đổi. 
• Được dùng để nhấn mạnh một điều liên quan đến một người hoặc một vật gì đó cụ thể.

Using 'the same' as a pronoun

• The same thing là đại từ để chỉ điều vừa được đề cập
• The same được dùng như trạng từ với ý nghĩa là một cách tương đồng, giống nhau

Tóm lại, cách dùng the same được thể hiện trong như: tính từ, đại từ và trạng từ. Từng trường hợp cụ thể sẽ có cách dùng the same khác nhau.

The structure of 'the same' in English

1. The same (as + N)

For example:

• Your glasses and my glasses are the same. (Cặp kính của bạn và tôi thì giống nhau)
• Your glasses are the same as mine. (Kính của bạn thì giống của tôi)

2. The same + noun + as

For instance:

• She is the same age as my best friend. (Cô ấy bằng tuổi với bạn thân của tôi)
• I bought the same dress as yours. (Tôi mua cái áo giống y như bạn)
• Our kids go to the same school as yours. (Con của chúng tôi hoc chung trường với các con của bạn)

3. Be exactly identical: Hoàn toàn giống nhau

Ví dụ: This one works in exactly the same way as the others (Cái này hoạt động y chang/ hoàn toàn giống những cái trước)

4. The same + noun + that: Chính xác như người/cái mà

Ví dụ: She’s still the same lovely girl that I knew 5 years ago. (Cô ấy vẫn là cô gái dễ thương mà tôi biết 5 năm trước)

5. Same old, same old: Vẫn chưa có gì mới xảy ra

For example:

• How’s it going?
• Oh, same old same old (Oh, vẫn vậy à)

6. The same thing(s): Những điều tương tự

For instance:

• They both said the same thing.(Họ đều nói chung một điều)
• The same thing happened to me last week. (Một chuyện như nhau xảy ra với tôi hồi tuần trước)

7. The same day: Cùng một ngày

For example: Last Friday, I resigned and left on the same day. (Hôm thứ Sáu tuần trước, tôi từ chức và rời đi vào cùng một ngày.)

Phrases commonly used with the same

All (or just) the same: mặc dù vậy, tuy nhiên, dù sao thì

E.g. She knew they meant it kindly, but it still hurt her all the same. (Cô ấy biết họ có ý tốt, nhưng vẫn làm cô ấy tổn thương.)

Be all the same to: Không quan trọng về chuyện xảy ra

E.g. It didn't matter to me where it was being sold. (Với tôi, nó không quan trọng nó được bán ở đâu.)

One and the same: dùng để nhấn mạnh cùng một người hoặc một điều gì đó

For instance, a casual listener might even perceive the two projects as identical. (Người nghe ngẫu nhiên có thể thậm chí nghĩ hai dự án là giống nhau.)

The same to you!: Có chung quan điểm (thường dùng trong chào hỏi)

For example:

• Have a nice day! (Chúc một ngày tốt lành!)
• The same to you! (Bạn cũng vậy nhé!)

Các từ đồng nghĩa với the same 

Similar

Nghĩa là tương đương, tương tự.

Similar được sử dụng như tính từ

Miêu tả sự tương đồng trong ngoại hình, tính cách hoặc số lượng. Tuy nhiên, không thể biểu hiện sự giống nhau 100% như the same.

E.g. Ví dụ, cả hai cánh của một con chim phải rất tương tự về kích thước và hình dạng nếu muốn bay một cách hài hòa.

Similar được sử dụng như danh từ

Được dùng để chỉ một người hoặc vật có tính tương đồng với người/vật khác được đề cập trong câu.

E.g. In other words, if a regular person would describe two images as essentially the same, they are 'similars'

Similar có nghĩa là tương tự nhau.

Similar được dùng như tính từ

Giữa hai hoặc nhiều hơn hai người/vật, nghĩa là có tính tương tự nhau.

E.g. In theory people became more similar and in many ways the world became much fairer

Alike được sử dụng như trạng từ

Nghĩa là theo một cách giống nhau hoặc tương tự.

E.g. The employees stared blankly after him, all dressed similarly, members of the same club.

Phân biệt the same so với alike, like, similar

“The same” together with “alike”, “like”, “similar” all mean alike, but the usage and structure of like, alike, and similar still differ from how “the same” is used.
