2. Structures of Have with verbs
The verb have can be used with various types of words, especially verbs. Let's explore the structures of have with common verbs below.
2.1. Have + someone + V (infinitive): ask someone to do something
This structure is used to indicate requesting someone to do something, meaning 'to cause someone to do something'.
E.g.:
- I had my mom cook dinner for me. (Tôi nhờ mẹ nấu bữa tối cho tôi).
- He had the bouncers throw them out of the club. (Anh ấy đã để những người bảo vệ ném chúng ra khỏi câu lạc bộ).
2.2. Have + something + V (past participle): to cause/make something to be done by someone
This structure is the passive form of Have + object + V (infinitive), also expressing requesting someone to do something.
E.g.:
- I must have my watch repaired. (Tớ phải đi sửa đồng hồ thôi).
- I’m going to have my hair cut this afternoon. (Chiều nay tớ sẽ đi cắt tóc).
Note: 'Get' can replace 'have' in this case.
E.g.: If you don’t get out of my house, I’ll have you arrested = If you don’t get out of my house, I’ll get you arrested. (Nếu anh không ra khỏi nhà tôi, tôi sẽ khiến anh bị tống giam đấy).
