I. What is parallel structure?
Parallel structure (Cấu trúc song song) is a sentence containing two or more elements or clauses with similar grammatical structures. Examples of parallel structure:
- My younger sister likes dancing, swimming and jumping ropes. (Em gái của tôi thích nhảy, bơi và nhảy dây.)
- Adam says his new girlfriend is pretty, lovely and mature. (Adam nói rằng người bạn gái mới của anh ấy xinh đẹp, đáng yêu và trưởng thành.)
II. Rules for using parallel structure in English
1. Using with coordinating conjunctions
Listing is the easiest form of Parallel Structure. Candidates often face less difficulty in ensuring parallel content. However, when connecting clauses created by conjunctions to form longer sentences, candidates often tend to forget the initial form of the word they used.
- Ví dụ 1: She is pretty but tall. → Đây là một ví dụ dễ bởi vì sau động từ to be có từ pretty, vì vậy ta nhận biết được ngay phía sau ta phải dùng là một tính từ là tall.
- Ví dụ 2: Mary Jane likes jogging, running, and to dance. → Trong ví dụ này hẳn các bạn sẽ nhận ra được điểm “sai sai” ở đây có phải không nào? Đúng là vậy, khi có hai động từ phía trước sử dụng Ving (jogging, running) còn động từ cuối cùng lại không theo đúng dạng ngữ pháp Ving (to dance → dancing).
2. Using with correlating conjunctions
The coordinating conjunctions commonly used with parallel structure include: not only…, and…, or…, neither…, nor…, but also…., both…, either…
- Ví dụ 1: She speaks English not only fluently but also naturally. (Cô ấy nói tiếng Anh không chỉ thành thạo mà còn tự nhiên.)
- Ví dụ 2: It was both a long ceremony and very tedious. → Ở đây sau to be thì mình dùng adjectives để mô tả buổi lễ này, vậy cách dùng đúng là: The ceremony was both long and tedious.
3. Comparison structures
In addition to correlating conjunctions, parallel structure is also used with comparison conjunctions. Comparison structures like as … as for equality or comparative forms for inequality are inherently parallel structures.
- Ví dụ 1: The language skills of the students in the morning class are the same as those of the students in the evening class. (Các kỹ năng ngoại ngữ của các bạn học sinh lớp buổi sáng tương tự với kỹ năng của các bạn lớp buổi tối.)
- Ví dụ 2: “My income is smaller than my wife.” → Nếu nhìn qua về ngữ nghĩa thì câu này có vẻ đúng: Thu nhập của tôi ít hơn của vợ tôi. Tuy nhiên, tiếng Anh không như tiếng Việt. Ở đây, rõ ràng 2 đối tượng so sánh không đồng nhất với nhau “my income” và “my wife”. Do đó, câu đúng phải là “My income is smaller than my wife’s” (Thu nhập của tôi thấp hơn của vợ tôi).
