The more ideas, the better?

A suitable length for an IELTS Writing task 2 should consist of 4 – 5 paragraphs. While there is no maximum limit for the number of words, you should not write too long (e.g., 500 words), especially if you are an 'amateur' (newcomer with little experience).

In a 4-paragraph essay, you only need about 2 main ideas – one for each body paragraph. These ideas will be elaborated with details, explanations, and examples.

Will creative ideas be awarded a higher band score?

How to brainstorm ideas for IELTS Writing Task 2

Alongside familiar topics like 'environment', 'education', or 'technology', IELTS Writing Task 2 topics have also introduced fresh themes such as 'space exploration' and 'art'. Lack of personal connection or knowledge about these topics often troubles many candidates.

So how do you brainstorm ideas for Writing Task 2?

1. Group ideas by major themes

Depending on how you categorize them, you can group Writing topics into 6 – 10 major themes:

3. Read news, newspapers

Task 2 requires you to express opinions on a social issue. What other sources of social information are more diverse, rich, and multidimensional than news/media?

Instead of spending all your time surfing the web, watching showbiz and entertainment videos, follow and subscribe to English-language reading sources (both Vietnamese and international newspapers) to enrich your general knowledge. This will enrich your own Writing idea treasure.

4. Finally, practice is the key

The more you practice with different topics, the quicker you'll come up with ideas. Similarly, organizing supporting arguments will become easier as you practice developing your main ideas multiple times.
