I. Discussion Essay là gì?
Khác với dạng Bài luận tranh, một ví dụ về Bài thảo luận yêu cầu thí sinh thảo luận về một vấn đề được đưa ra từ hai hoặc nhiều quan điểm khác nhau.
1. Phương pháp nhận diện loại Bài thảo luận
Nếu yêu cầu của đề bài là:
- Discuss both views…
- Discuss both these views…
- Discuss both sides…
Thì đó chính là loại Bài thảo luận IELTS.
2. Cấu trúc một ví dụ về Bài thảo luận
1.1. Phần giới thiệu (Introduction)
Viết khoảng 2-3 câu, trong đó:
-
- Paraphrase đề bài: 1 – 2 câu.
- Thesis statement (nói về nội dung chính của toàn bài): Trả lời trực tiếp cho câu hỏi của đề bài.
1.2. Phần thân bài (Body)
Thân bài thường được phát triển thành 2 đoạn văn, mỗi đoạn khoảng 5 – 7 câu. Ý chính của phần thân bài sẽ bao gồm:

- Body 1: Các lợi ích của side 1 (mỗi lợi ích sẽ kèm theo lý do và ví dụ)
- Body 2: Các lợi ích của side 2 (mỗi lợi ích sẽ kèm theo lý do và ví dụ)
1.3. Phần tổng kết (Conclusion)
Viết khoảng 1 – 2 câu, trong đó:

- Paraphrase lại phần thesis statement.
- Nêu lại ý kiến, quan điểm cá nhân của mình đã đề cập trong bài.

Supporters of the idea that pop musicians deserve higher pay point to their commercial success. Simply put, pop artists generate more revenue for record labels compared to classical musicians. With their carefully-crafted image and the mass appeal of their genre, pop stars attract large audiences and convert those numbers into profits. Artists like Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, among the most renowned names in the industry, have amassed huge fortunes through their record-breaking performances. Given this, it's understandable why some argue that pop stars deserve to be rewarded for their commercial success more than musicians in other genres, including classical performers.
On the other hand, classical musicians are believed by their supporters to deserve higher pay due to the extensive effort required in their craft. Mastering their art is demanding, not to mention the significant investment they make in their instruments. For instance, a beginner-level clarinet can cost upwards of 500 dollars, and professional-grade instruments cost several times more. Moreover, classical musicians spend their entire careers perfecting their skills while maintaining performances to make a living, which takes a toll on them physically and mentally. This is unlike pop stars who can still earn royalties even after their prime. Therefore, some argue that classical musicians should earn as much as, if not more than, pop stars.
In my view, while both perspectives have merit, the market should ultimately decide. Authorities should intervene minimally to address any grievances, as excessive intervention may seem clumsy and unfair.

By dedicating more time and effort to research, governments can better prevent, detect, and respond to such deadly diseases. Furthermore, global health issues also impact international trade and the national economy. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many nations faced economic downturns. Without urgent scientific research for vaccines and medications, this pandemic could jeopardize the physical and financial well-being of millions of people globally.
However, other environmental and economic issues should be prioritized as they are also determinants of international health issues. Environmental issues such as global warming, pollution, and deforestation have led to severe weather conditions, global food shortages, and the spread of various diseases. Therefore, using science to understand the causes and solutions to such problems should be a top priority. Additionally, economic issues such as poverty or inflation result in poor living conditions, limited access to healthcare, and insufficient resources for healthcare advancements. Addressing these serious issues through intensive research may serve as a preventive measure against health crises.
In conclusion, while it is important to prioritize health research, I believe that there are more critical environmental and economic issues that require scientific attention.

Some people argue that paying taxes is a sufficient contribution to society, while others believe that individuals have more responsibilities as members of society beyond paying taxes. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

While some argue that paying taxes is sufficient to fulfill this role, others believe that citizenship responsibilities extend beyond that. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives before presenting my final opinion on this issue.
On one hand, supporters of tax payment as a sufficient contribution argue that taxes play a crucial role in the socio-economic development of every nation. The most evident sector benefiting from taxes is public infrastructure, as the main financial resources for building roads, hospitals, schools, and other essential public facilities come from government budgets, which are funded by taxes. Taxes also support public subsidies for education, social welfare, and emerging industries. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam, taxes contributed to viral testing, free treatment for patients, and financial aid for the hardest-hit economic sectors. Therefore, by paying taxes, citizens prove their worth to society.
However, those holding the opposite view argue that socio-economic growth depends not only on financial resources but also on other forms of contribution. This can include physical contributions such as mandatory military service in South Korea or voluntary service in Vietnam. Moreover, in today's knowledge-based society, proactive contributions of expertise in various fields are needed. Only through the accumulation of knowledge and experience can humanity progress and lay the foundation for sustainable development. For instance, in the face of climate change, citizens can contribute by researching environmentally-friendly technologies to address this issue. In summary, contributions can take many forms beyond tax payment.
In conclusion, from my perspective, tax payments and other forms of contributions, including physical strength and intellectual power, are all crucial factors in socio-economic development. Therefore, people can contribute in various ways according to their abilities.

Moreover, engaging in sports enhances mental well-being by improving sleep quality, releasing stress-relieving chemicals like endorphins and dopamine, and promoting overall happiness.
However, the importance of sports extends beyond recreation. It teaches valuable life lessons, from teamwork to resilience in the face of failure. Sports unite people from diverse backgrounds, religions, and cultures toward a common goal, teaching trust and cooperation. Dealing with failure is another crucial lesson learned in sports, Mytouraring individuals for challenges in the real world.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that sports are more than just leisure activities and play a crucial role in societal development.
