For a long period, the shipbuilding division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, part of Northrop Grumman, has been the designer, manufacturer, and also handled the refueling/maintenance for the U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. This division includes two shipyards: Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company and Ingalls Shipbuilding.
In March 2011, Northrop Grumman spun off its shipbuilding division to form Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), which officially became an independent company. Naturally, the two historic shipyards also came under HII's umbrella, making it the largest military shipbuilding company in the U.S. today.
Newport News Shipbuilding, established in 1886 in Newport News, Virginia, was the shipyard responsible for building the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise (CVN-65). Ingalls Shipbuilding, founded in 1938 in Mississippi, builds a wider range of ships, including destroyers, amphibious assault ships, and patrol vessels.

Thanks to the combined expertise of these two historic shipyards, HII plays a crucial role in U.S. maritime security. The company reports that it has spent the past 75 years building over 30 aircraft carriers, with the most recent being the delivery of the first Gerald R. Ford-class carrier to the U.S. Navy in 2017.
Although HII is the sole manufacturer of the Ford-class aircraft carriers, it does not handle everything from A to Z. The HII supply chain involves over 2,450 companies across 48 states, employing 13,100 people. Therefore, in a way, the aircraft carrier is a collective effort of many companies, not just HII.
Main Aircraft Carrier Shipyard
The enormous size of these ships gives the impression that many places are involved in their construction. However, they are actually built in just one place: the Newport News Shipyard in Virginia.
Although not the only shipyard of the US Navy (USN) in the U.S., Newport News is where the final, fully assembled aircraft carrier is made. It is the sole facility for the construction, refueling, and major overhauls of USN aircraft carriers. Submarines of the Virginia and Columbia classes are also constructed here.

The shipyard spans an impressive 2.2 square kilometers, equipped with cutting-edge facilities like a 900-ton gantry crane, one of the largest in the world. Dry dock number 12 is the biggest dry dock in the Western Hemisphere and can accommodate the largest ships. Newport News is also conveniently located near the Norfolk Naval Base, offering essential support to the USN.
Out of the 44,000 employees at Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), 25,000 work at Newport News, representing nearly 60% of HII's workforce. It is the largest industrial employer in Virginia. Their current main task is the design and production of Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers.
